A Streaming Guide to Nightbitch
Amy Adams is returning to the big screen. The six-time Oscar nominee is back to dive into the wild and surreal world of motherhood in Nightbitch. The new film, directed by Marielle Heller is a darkly comedic, visceral exploration of identity, gender roles, and rage, based on Rachel Yoder’s 2021 bestselling novel. The movie is now playing in theaters.
As Heller described it to Vanity Fair, Nightbitch is “a comedy for women and a horror film for men” that reflects the absurd and animalistic truths of being a woman.
Adams stars as a suburban stay-at-home mom, referred to only as “Mother.” A former visual artist, she now navigates the monotonous grind of parenting her toddler son (played by twins Arleigh Patrick Snowden and Emmett James Snowden) while her husband (Scoot McNairy) is often away for work. She also begins to experience bizarre physical changes: hair growing in strange places, an intensified sense of smell, and even signs of a tail forming.
“It’s about motherhood and rage,” Heller told Vanity Fair. “And you either get that or you don’t.” Her screenplay, created during her own experience of pandemic-era parenting isolation, channels her raw, personal perspective into the story. “I was writing it after being isolated in my house for a year. It was a nightmare,” she shared with Vanity Fair. Adams brings her own authenticity to the role, adding, “It felt so organic, because there’s many a day where I look at myself and think, “Well, that’s new. What’s that?”
Nightbitch opened in theaters on Friday, December 6. To find out how and when to watch the film from home, keep scrolling.
