FCT Police begin trial of four officers over alleged extortion, illegal traffic duty

ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced orderly room trial of four police officers accused of abandoning their official duties, engaging in unauthorised traffic enforcement and allegedly extorting money from a motorist in Maitama District, Abuja.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, ordered the disciplinary proceedings following the arrest of the officers over the alleged extortion of the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the officers were being tried for violating police regulations.
According to her, the incident occurred on July 11, 2026, at about 3:34 p.m., when four officers — ASP Clement Ehigala, ASP Sunday Okpe, Inspector Samuel Onoja and Sergeant Yakubu Emmanuel — allegedly abandoned their designated duty posts and proceeded to Banex Plaza Junction, Wuse II, where they carried out unauthorised traffic enforcement.
Adeh said the officers reportedly stopped a motorist on the allegation of violating traffic regulations and allegedly collected ₦52,000 from him.
She added that the motorist was later identified as the ICPC Chairman.
“Following receipt of the complaint, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, ordered the immediate arrest of the four officers and directed that they be subjected to orderly room trial for abandoning their lawful duty posts, embarking on unauthorised traffic enforcement and engaging in the alleged extortion,” the statement read.
The Command said disciplinary proceedings had commenced in accordance with established police regulations, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability and zero tolerance for misconduct among its personnel.
The police authorities assured residents that officers found culpable after the trial would face appropriate sanctions.
