On Sunday, Princess Charlotte joined her parents and older brother, Prince George, at the Wimbledon men’s singles final.
Kate Middleton, who serves as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, arrived wearing an emerald green dress by London-based designer Emilia Wickstead. She accessorized with brown Ralph Lauren pumps, a DeMellier bag, and jewelry from Van Cleef and Arpels and Halcyon Days. Sitting alongside her mother, the 11-year-old princess wore a sky-blue dress, Ray-Ban sunglasses, and a charm bracelet that paid subtle tribute to a cherished piece that the late Princess Diana received as a gift.
According to reports, Diana was given a charm bracelet by Charles after their wedding in 1981, and over the following 10 years, he added a new charm to mark each anniversary. Included in the collection of charms he chose for her were a pair of ballet slippers, a polo cap, a pig, an apple, and a miniature St. Paul’s Cathedral, which is where the couple were married. Two other charms formed the initials “H” and “W” for each of Diana’s sons, Prince Harry and Prince William. It is reported that the piece was so treasured by the late princess that she rarely wore it in public.
This isn’t the first time that Charlotte’s jewelry selection has nodded to Diana. While attending Trooping the Colour, the public celebration of King Charles’s birthday, in June, the young princess wore a pearl bracelet. She matched with her mother, Kate, who wore the three-strand pearl bracelet from Nigel Milne that originally belonged to Diana. Although the charm bracelet worn by Charlotte for the tournament’s final on Sunday was not an heirloom, its resemblance to Diana’s beloved piece felt particularly poignant.
The Wales family was front and center in the stands of Wimbledon’s Centre Court and received a standing ovation as they arrived. Charlotte, who is understood to have taken after her mother as a keen tennis player, spent the game closely spectating.
