Summer 2026 Is Set to Smell Soft, Salty, and Skin-Like
Much like with my clothing, I switch out my fragrance collection with the changing seasons. And even though I love summer, I usually feel melancholic when I put my winter perfumes away. Why? Summer scents have just never been able to compare to my deep, artfully layered cold-weather perfumes—until this year.
The perfume trends for the 2026 season are experimental and transportive, perfect for balmy weather. “This year, we’re seeing perfumes that feel like warm skin, sunlight, sea salt, fabric, humidity, and clean hair,” says Gustavo Romero, perfumer and founder of The Fragrance Alliance Network.
You don’t need to be a fan of the clean girl movement to enjoy the scents of the summer, though. From extra juicy fruits to aromas that teleport you to the shore with just a spritz, there’s a little something for everyone. Keep scrolling to discover the five perfume trends that are taking over summer 2026. Plus, find the top fragrances you’ll want to add to your lineup STAT.
Fruity Photorealism
Cast aside your ideas of what fruity perfumes smell like, because they’re undergoing a major evolution. While the category used to be associated with synthetic-smelling, extra-sweet interpretations of berries and stone fruits, the new iterations are so life-like you’ll feel like you’re spritzing yourself with citrus oil squeezed straight from the peel. “These hyper-realistic, juicy interpretations capture texture, tartness, ripeness, and freshness,” says Kara Kowalski, director of fragrance and formula development at Snif.
Fruity fragrances have become much more nuanced than your standard apple, strawberry, or passion fruit aromas, too. Romero says perfumers are experimenting with different elements of fruit, such as “green fig sap, fuzzy peach skin, salted mango flesh, slightly fermented tropical fruits, and even watery guava pulp.”
Two of the most popular fruits you’ll undoubtedly catch a whiff of this summer are peaches and strawberries, adds Linda G. Levy, president of The Fragrance Foundation. “Peaches look, smell, and taste like summer. They’re sun-kissed, sweet, and irresistible. Strawberry is one of the most transportive notes in perfumes,” she adds. “It is playful, aromatic, tangy, and sweet.”
Iced Gourmand Lattes
Gourmands don’t always have to be heavy and enveloping, and this summer’s fragrance trends prove it. “Gourmands are still on top, but for summer I’m seeing consumers lean into fragrances that feel colder, lighter, and more refreshing rather than dense or syrupy,” says Kowalski.
“Forget the cakes and cookies,” she adds. “Think of perfumes that are inspired by drinks with notes like iced coffee, frozen fruits, cold milk, or fizzy soda.” Milky notes and hints of java reign supreme as temperatures rise, but we’re also seeing saltier gourmand facets, like sesame, toasted rice, and plain old salt, for a muskier sweetness that lies close to the skin. “These notes are emotionally warm, textural, and escapist, but still elegant,” says Romero.
Quiet Luxury
Over the past few years, scents have gotten stronger. We hit a peak last summer, when I found it nearly impossible to walk one block without getting hit by someone’s signature scent. Now, you can finally breathe a sigh of relief (and maybe some fresh air), because perfumes are staying close to skin this summer. “The new luxury is not necessarily being smelled from across the room; it’s being irresistible when someone is already close to you,” says Romero.
Second-skin perfumes still make an impact, but they’re much more intimate. “We’re seeing solar musks, creamy woods, airy ambrox structures, mineral accords, steamed-skin effects, lactonic musks, salted vanillas, and transparent sandalwoods—[these notes] bloom with body heat rather than overpowering it,” says Romero.
Between the extra-high temperatures and more subtle scents, these perfumes act as a welcome refresh that still elevates your vibe without overwhelming others’ noses. “The intimate, close-to-skin perfumes create the sensation of fragrance becoming part of the wearer rather than sitting on top of them,” Romero adds.
Peonies for All
It’s no secret that florals and summertime go hand-in-hand. However, peonies, in particular, are blooming far and wide in the scent-osphere this year.
“This flower is slightly sweet yet dynamically aromatic, blending beautifully with other florals,” says Levy. Peony facets add a delicate and airy sweetness to a perfume composition, creating an aroma that’s flirty, bright, and easy to pair with juicy fruits, soft musks, or other florals.
Salty Seaside Bliss
Even if you don’t have a seaside escape planned this summer, one spritz of an ocean-inspired scent can transport you right to a sunny coast. The transcendent marine aromas evoke a refreshing sea breeze and have an inherent calming quality. “The new aquatics are mineral, creamy, sunlit, salty, and often blended with incense, driftwood, fig, neroli, or musks,” says Romero.
Much like gourmands, this scent category has gone through a reinvention. “Aquatic has become more sophisticated, transitioning from dense mineralic sea-spray intensity to cleaner, modernized interpretations of marine freshness.” Expect salted musks with a tinge of vanilla, as well as oceanic blooms blended with creamy woods.
