Selena Gomez Discussed Her Outlook on Dating Amid Benny Blanco Relationship

This month, Selena Gomez revealed she was dating producer Benny Blanco, surprising fans. The pop star had spoken out quite a bit about her time as a single lady the last few years as she’s casually dated. In a new interview with Vogue México y Latinoamérica, Gomez opened up about dating and how it has informed her music. Published on December 21, the interview was done before she shared her connection to Blanco.

“Honestly, I have to start being attracted to the right kind of people,” she said. “It’s very hard to find someone who can listen to you and care about you…But I know when it happens it will be great and you will want it to be healthy.”

Two of Gomez’s most famous relationships were with fellow musical artists Justin Bieber and The Weeknd.

“I firmly believe that everything in my life happens for a reason,” she said of these past relationships. “I always try to say, ‘What’s the lesson here? I want to learn the lesson and I want to grow from this.’”

She added, “I want to experience what it’s like to get through those moments that are really difficult.”

Talking about her upcoming album, Gomez said that ‘freedom’ is the main theme, specifically from “constraints” she had in her 20s. She explained it’s taken her a while to make new music because her perspective has changed.

“I didn’t have anything to write about because I’m so used to writing sad girl music,” she said. “And I love a song like that, but I wasn’t going through something that was breaking me down…I want to try to find ways to make good pop music, with a message that really means something…I haven’t written a single sad song for this album.”
