Mpohor-Fiase District Assembly Sensitises 18 Communities on Formation of WATSAN Committees

The Mpohor-Fiase District Assembly has begun a sensitisation exercise across 18 communities to educate residents on the importance of establishing Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) Committees to ensure the effective management and sustainability of borehole facilities provided through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and the Hon. Member of Parliament (MP).

The communities benefiting from the ongoing exercise include Bowobrayie, Anhweim, Miawani, Memunakrom, Boahenekrom, Kankyeabo, Tumentu, K3, K9, Awoyie, Anyinase, Domeabra, Manpong, Akotrom, Amuzukrom, Norpalm School, Bomba and Ampeasem.

The sensitisation programme emphasises community ownership, accountability and responsible management of both mechanised and hand‑pump water systems to ensure their continued functionality. Residents are being educated on the roles and responsibilities of WATSAN Committees, including overseeing daily operations of water facilities, coordinating routine maintenance, promoting proper usage and mobilising funds for repairs when necessary.

This initiative reflects the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that investments in water infrastructure deliver long-term benefits to beneficiary communities. The Assembly maintains that providing water facilities must go hand‑in‑hand with strong community management structures to prevent neglect and guarantee sustained access to safe drinking water.

As part of the exercise, communities are being encouraged to establish their WATSAN Committees before the official commissioning of the water projects by the Hon. District Chief Executive (DCE) and the Hon. Member of Parliament. This will ensure that residents are fully prepared to take responsibility for managing and maintaining the facilities.

The Assembly is therefore urging traditional authorities, Assembly Members, opinion leaders, women’s groups, youth groups and all residents to actively participate in the process and support the formation of these committees.

Through community participation and collective responsibility, the Mpohor-Fiase District Assembly aims to safeguard investments in water infrastructure and promote sustainable access to safe drinking water across the district.
