With New York Fashion Week now in the rearview mirror, it’s time to take stock of one standout trend that dominated the runways: thoughtful layering. Piling on various pieces is instinctive when the weather cools down—and is often dictated purely by the forecast. This season, however, layering feels far more intentional. Designers approached it as an art form: V-necks precisely framing crisp polo collars, knits stacked with purpose, and outerwear styled in dreamy, tonal color combinations. Naturally, I took note—and I’m here to share plenty of inspiration on how to achieve a perfectly layered look yourself.

The Best Layering Pieces to Shop Now

The fall/winter 2026 runways offered no shortage of ideas, with each designer delivering their own distinct take. At Tory Burch, models walked in strategically composed ensembles—one statement look featured a blue silk shirt collar peeking out from under a chartreuse knit, grounded by an indigo wool coat. 3.1 Phillip Lim embraced maximalism, showcasing head-to-toe layered knits in contrasting colors and patterns. Staud proposed a sportier formula, tucking sheer blouses into quarter-zip pullovers. And nodding to the resurgence of bold animal print, Ralph Lauren styled a leopard vest under a shearling-trim leather bomber, punctuated by a tucked-in paisley neck scarf.

It’s clear: There are no strict rules here, and creativity is key. Don’t hesitate to embrace vibrant colors, dramatic prints, or unexpected silhouettes. Personally, I’m thrilled to see the return of maximalist shapes and palettes—it’s the perfect excuse to revive that old patterned sweater hiding in the back of your closet (and the added warmth is a welcome bonus). Of course, layering isn’t limited to cold weather. The same intentional approach can be achieved with lightweight fabrics like linen and silk for a breathable take on the trend as we head into spring.
