Why Kim Kardashian Covered Her Face at the Academy Museum Gala
THE RUNDOWN
- Kim Kardashian attended the 5th annual Academy Museum Gala.
- She wore a nude fabric couture look from Maison Margiela.
- The ensemble swathed The Kardashians star’s entire face and head.
On Saturday, Kim Kardashian wore a dramatic Maison Margiela couture gown to the 5th annual Academy Museum Gala. The look included a structural sleeveless bodice with detached cape sleeves and a face veil that entirely swathed Kardashian’s face and the back of her head. The covering emphasized the ornate tiered silver choker necklace with green stones holding the semi-sheer nude fabric in place.
Her face was only slightly visible through the head veil, which was collected by a ruched seam at the top of her head. As a star famous for her iconic makeup styling and striking features, fans might be wondering why she chose to go somewhat incognito on such a big night.
The ensemble was styled in almost exactly the same way as when it was first seen on the runway. It appears as though Kardashian wanted to honor Maison Margiela’s intention by including the face covering with the gown rather than leaving it off. The fashion house has experimented with face coverings during various runway shows over the past few decades, so Kardashian may have felt it was especially important to include.
Kardashian has also worn looks that cover her face before. At the 2021 Met Gala, she wore a black Balenciaga haute couture gown with a long train and a fabric veil that allowed her long ponytail to drape down her back.
And in August this year, she wore another Margiela dress to the DVF Awards that was originally styled with a face covering as well, though she shared a number of photos from the event where her face was revealed and her hair was down.
