Will The Dropout Ever Return for Season 2?
With the release of Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s new documentary film, You Can See Everything, interest in Elizabeth Holmes has been on the rise. According to Variety, The Dropout—Hulu’s 2022 limited series starring Amanda Seyfried as Holmes amid the rise and fall of her biotech company, Theranos—saw an 186 percent increase in viewership in September ahead of the film’s release. Those numbers only continued to soar the following month. The week of the doc’s October 16 debut, viewership rose 92 percent compared to the week before, per Variety.
Fans are clearly hungry for more stories about Holmes, but does that mean The Dropout could return for a second season? Here’s what to know.
Has The Dropout been renewed for a second season?
The Dropout has not been renewed for a second season and was billed as a limited series upon its release. The show’s creator and showrunner, Elizabeth Meriwether, has also expressed that she wasn’t open to giving the show another installment.
In a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, Seyfried said that playing Holmes was “the best role I’d ever been given.” She added, “It would be another thrill of my life if I got to continue it a little bit…there’s so much more to say.”
In response to Seyfried’s comments, Meriwether said in an interview with Vulture that The Dropout had run its course. “She keeps saying that, and I keep telling her that I will not be writing a second season! She actually texted me this weekend like, ‘I hear you’ve started working on a second season.’ She’s messing with me a little bit,” she explained. “I would love to work with her and all the people who worked on this show again, but this story has gone as far as I want to go with it.”
What has Amanda Seyfried said about the future of the show?
In October 2026, Seyfried’s stance on a possible season 2 of The Dropout had changed. When asked during a red carpet interview on October 17 (the day after You Can See Everything opened in theaters) whether she was interested in another season or in meeting Holmes for a chat, she responded, “I don’t think so, but life is long.”
She added that she kept up with news about Holmes “on and off” since starring in the series. (Those who have seen YCSE will know what she really means here.)
What else can I watch if I enjoyed You Can See Everything and The Dropout?
The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, an HBO documentary released in 2019, chronicles the story of Theranos and provides a look at Holmes’s relationship with the company’s COO, Sunny Balwani. It’s available to stream on HBO Max.
