Newmont presents laptop to Bono Regional Best Journalist

Newmont Ahafo South Mine has presented a brand-new Lenovo laptop to Lawrence Yeboah Gyan, the 2025 Bono Regional Best Journalist, completing his prize package for emerging as the overall winner of the 4th Bono Region Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards.
Mr. Stephen Kenyo presented the laptop on behalf of Mr. Samuel Osei, Communications and External Relations Manager for Newmont Ahafo North and Ahafo South Mines.
The presentation, made last Thursday, followed the awards ceremony held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the Sweet Touch Hotel in Sunyani, where Mr Gyan received a plaque and certificate in recognition of his outstanding journalistic work.
Newmont was one of the lead sponsors of the awards, contributing GH¢15,000 cash towards the organisation of the event in addition to the laptop presented to the overall winner.
The gesture underscores the mining company’s longstanding relationship with the media fraternity and its support for journalism and professional excellence in the Bono Region.
Mr Gyan, the Acting General Manager of Wisdom FM, the campus radio station of the Catholic University of Ghana, emerged as the overall regional winner after an outstanding performance in the 2025 awards year.
He also won two other categories: the Children’s Advocacy Award and Best Health and Medical Care Report, making him one of the night’s biggest winners.
His award-winning investigative feature, titled “When the Dead Are No Longer Sacred: A Cultural and Public Crisis in Ghana,” examined the growing practice of disrespectful treatment of corpses during funeral celebrations, particularly among sections of the youth.
The incisive report highlighted the cultural and public health implications of such practices, raising concerns about the potential risks to public health and calling for urgent public education and a renewed sense of respect for the dead.
Mr Gyan previously worked with Sun City Radio in Sunyani before moving to Wisdom FM, where he continues to contribute to public-interest journalism.
The 4th Bono Region GJA Awards recognised journalists whose work made significant contributions to public education, accountability and development in the region.
