Gov’t to broadcast MMDAs’ General Assembly, Town Hall meetings live – Ayariga 

The government is set to introduce live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to improve transparency and citizen participation in local governance.

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, said the initiative would provide citizens with greater access to proceedings and discussions at the local government level.

He said it would also help generate public interest in the upcoming District-Level Elections and encourage more citizens to participate actively in the decentralisation process.

“I have engaged with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to roll out a programme to provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across our Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies,” Ayariga said in a social media post on Tuesday, September 15.

He said the programme would be implemented in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), which provides the legal framework for Ghana’s decentralised local governance system.

“We also hope this initiative will generate greater public interest in and participation in the upcoming District-Level Elections, while encouraging more citizens to actively engage in the decentralisation process,” he said.

The Bawku Central MP said greater citizen involvement is necessary to build local institutions that are transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of communities.
