The machine that can restart a heart

For many people, an Automated External Defibrillator, or AED, looks intimidating.

It is often portrayed in films as a sophisticated medical device operated by doctors in emergency rooms while alarms sound in the background.

The reality is very different.

An AED was designed for ordinary people.To understand why it matters, it helps to understand what happens during some forms of cardiac arrest.

When the heart’s electrical system becomes disorganised, the heart can no longer pump blood effectively around the body. Instead of producing a coordinated heartbeat, it may quiver ineffectively, preventing oxygen-rich blood from reaching vital organs.

When this happens, CPR can help maintain circulation, but it cannot correct the underlying electrical problem. That is where an AED comes in.

An Automated External Defibrillator analyses the heart’s rhythm and determines whether a controlled electrical shock may help restore a normal heartbeat.

The most important word in its name is “automated.”
The device performs the analysis itself. It does not rely on the user to diagnose the problem or interpret complicated medical information.

Once switched on, the AED provides clear spoken instructions. It tells the user exactly what to do and guides them through each step of the process.
One of the most common fears surrounding AEDs is the possibility of making a mistake.

Modern AEDs are specifically designed to minimise that risk. Before delivering a shock, the device analyses the heart’s rhythm. If a shock is not appropriate, it will not advise one.
In other words, the machine makes the decision.

The user follows the instructions. This simplicity is one of the reasons AEDs have become such an important part of emergency response systems around the world.

Like CPR, an AED is not a guarantee of survival. It is one component of a broader emergency response. Together, however, CPR and defibrillation have transformed the way cardiac emergencies are managed.

Perhaps the most important thing to understand is that AEDs were never designed exclusively for healthcare professionals. They were created because cardiac emergencies do not always happen in hospitals.

Understanding what an AED does helps demystify a device that has become an important part of modern emergency care.
