The Shards Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Ryan Murphy has yet another hit on his hands with the arrival of The Shards. Set in 1981, the series offers a glamorous look into the lives of excessively wealthy students at a private school. Under a hedonistic veneer of parties and drugs, a darker reality begins to emerge when main character Bret finds his inner circle threatened by a serial killer.

The plot is inspired by Bret Easton Ellis’s 2023 novel of the same name, which offers a fictionalized look into his life as a teenager in Los Angeles, circa 1981. But season 1 of the television adaptation doesn’t end where the book does, which opens up the possibility of a second season—or a third—with the author’s blessing.

Here’s everything we know so far about a potential season 2 of The Shards.

The Shards has not been renewed for season 2 yet, but an announcement could come any day now that the finale is out on Hulu.

Murphy revealed that he has expressed a desire to do multiple seasons of The Shards, an idea that seems to have Bret Easton Ellis’s seal of approval.

“When I first met with him, he didn’t really want to do it as a limited series,” he shared in an interview with Variety published on August 12. “He always thought this could be a three-year dramatic series, if not longer. I like that idea. You have the space and time and energy. You’re not doing nine or 10 episodes. You’re going to try and do 30. That’s how I could add some of my own personal things in there.”

The Shards has yet to receive a renewal, but fans are hoping that Igby Rigney, Kaia Gerber, Homer Gere, Hayes Warner, Graham Campbell, Evan Rachel Wood, Wes Bentley, Owen Painter, Jordan Roth, and Ivy Wolk reprise their roles in the potential next installment.

Campbell sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter and noted that there are several scenes from the book that he wants adapted for season 2.

“I don’t want to say too much! Because you never know what’s going to make it in or what’s not, but I will say that I think we’ve done the show in a way where it’s really a love letter to the book,” he told the outlet. “I also think Ryan has taken it and expanded it into a work of fiction that’s exciting in its own right. I’m equally as excited to tackle things from the book as I am to see what’s new and what comes down the pipeline.”

He continued, “I really want to get into the nitty-gritty of his relationship with Bruce. It’s deeply complex, and Gus Halper, the actor who plays him, and I were able to get in there and talk a lot about what was going on behind our eyes and what it is we were talking about, the nature of our relationship. I think it’d be nice to explore that origin story.”
