Footballer remanded over suspected cannabis and Diazepam

A 39-year-old footballer has been remanded in police custody after he was allegedly found with a wrap of suspected cannabis and five diazepam tablets at a taxi station in Mampong in the Ashanti Region.

Sarfo Barfi, also known as Ayaala, and a resident of Mampong-Zongo, appeared before the Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District on Friday, 28th August 2026, over the alleged possession of narcotics.

The court, presided over by His Lordship Simon Nketiah Gagah, ordered that Barfi remain in police custody while investigators await the results of forensic analysis of the suspected drugs.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector C.K. Gyesi, the incident happened at about 6:15 p.m. on 26th August at the Mampong Taxi Station.

The prosecution said the complainant, Lance Corporal Joseph Appiah of the Regional CID in Mampong, was at the station when he noticed Barfi looking at him suspiciously.

The officer approached him, and several people who were with Barfi allegedly fled the scene. Barfi, however, remained at the station and was arrested.

A search allegedly led to the discovery of a wrap containing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. The substance was reportedly concealed inside an earpod case.

Five tablets of diazepam were also allegedly found in Barfi’s pocket.

The prosecution told the court that Barfi, in a cautioned statement, admitted possessing the suspected cannabis, saying he had bought it for his personal use.

The court has directed the police to send the seized substances to the Forensic Laboratory for analysis.

It also ordered the police to trace and arrest the person who allegedly supplied the suspected cannabis.

Barfi was subsequently remanded in police custody.

The case has been adjourned to Friday, 4th September 2026, when the prosecution is expected to present the forensic laboratory report.
