June 29 floods displace over 38,000 people, claim 12 lives — Interior Minister

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that the June 29 floods displaced more than 38,000 people, claimed 12 lives and left seven others missing across several parts of the country.

The flooding followed hours of heavy rainfall on Monday, June 29, which inundated communities, destroyed property and disrupted economic activities, particularly in the Greater Accra Region.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, June 30, the Minister said the disaster affected thousands of households, with government agencies continuing search, rescue and relief operations in the impacted areas.

“When you put all these numbers together, we have a total of 7,761 households that were displaced, with 38,802 individuals affected, with seven persons still missing,” the Asawase lawmaker told the House.

He presented a district-by-district breakdown of the impact, indicating that several municipalities recorded significant displacement.

The Minister noted that the casualty figures were based on reports available as of Tuesday morning, adding that the number of missing persons could change as rescue efforts continue.

“The total death, 12 individuals that we lost. Let me take this opportunity to extend our condolences, and that of government and the people of Ghana, to the families that lost their family members, and we assure them we are with them in this difficult moment,” he said.

Mr. Muntaka acknowledged that many affected residents were unable to return to their homes because of the flooding but assured Parliament that government was taking the necessary steps to support victims.
