  • The “Fashion Is Art” dress code invites guests to treat their looks as works of art.

One of this year’s co-chairs, Nicole Kidman, has arrived at the Met Gala, bringing her long-standing relationship with couture to fashion’s biggest red carpet.

The actress attended with her daughter, Sunday Rose, and both wore looks by Chanel. Kidman wore a red sequined long-sleeve number with feather details at the hip and cuffs, while Sunday wore a strapless pink dress adorned with floral appliqués, paired with matching earrings. The two made it clear that great style runs in the family.

This year’s dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” aligns with the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Costume Art,” which explores the relationship between clothing and the human body. The theme invites attendees to approach their looks as sculptural, expressive works, with an emphasis on silhouette, structure, and the body itself.

Kidman has long been a defining presence on the red carpet, particularly at the Met Gala. She has attended the event multiple times since her debut in 2003, often favoring classic Hollywood glamour while occasionally embracing more theatrical, archival-inspired designs. In recent years, her looks have included a re-worn Chanel gown from a 2003 campaign and a recreation of a sculptural 1952 Balenciaga design.

Her broader red carpet history has also had a lasting impact on fashion. Reflecting on her chartreuse John Galliano for Christian Dior gown at the 1997 Oscars, Kidman told Variety in March, “Well, it ignited European couture for the carpet.” She continued, “It was never like that before. The clothes were nice, but the idea of combining the couture houses with something as prestigious as the Oscars? That’s just a given now.”

Beyond the red carpet, Kidman continues to balance a wide range of projects. She recently starred in the Prime Video adaptation of Scarpetta, and is set to reprise her role alongside Sandra Bullock in Practical Magic 2. Speaking about her approach to her career, she told Variety, “Now I’m in a place of saying, ‘2026. Here we go.’”

Sunday Rose, 17, has also begun carving out her own presence in fashion, having made her runway debut at Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2025 show during Paris Fashion Week. In a recent cover story profile with ELLE Australia, she spoke about her mother’s influence, saying, “My mum is someone who has always been so creative and my biggest inspiration in life. She’s a key part of everything I do.”
