Shortly after Selena Gomez was spotted in the audience at the opening night of her former Disney Channel co-star and friend Demi Lovato’s It’s Not That Deep Tour in Orlando, Florida, Gomez confirmed she was there—and shared her own series of photos, including one where she posed backstage with Lovato.

“I am in tears. @ddlovato – this was hands down one of the best shows. Oh and the VOCALS? Psh *blown away*,” Gomez wrote on one Instagram Story. She also posted a red heart emoji over the photo of them together.

But the two stars’ Instagram activity went beyond their posts. Fans also noticed that Lovato and Gomez quietly refollowed each other on Instagram:

Gomez and Lovato used to be very close during their Disney Channel days, even recording video blogs on YouTube. (They first met while on Barney, with Gomez telling ELLE in 2018, “I love her. I’ve known her since I was seven.”) They were last photographed together in October 2017 at the InStyle Awards.

In 2020, Lovato told Harper’s Bazaar that the pair weren’t friends. Gomez had posted an Instagram Story with a message of support for Lovato following her 2020 Grammys performance of “Anyone.” Lovato had originally recorded the song days before she overdosed in July 2018.

“I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational, and DESERVED this moment was,” Gomez wrote. “Demi, I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”

Lovato was surprised by the tribute, telling the magazine, “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so it felt…” She stopped there, saying instead, “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”

But in September, Lovato signaled things were much warmer when she discussed Gomez’s new album I Said I Love You First on Watch What Happens Live.

“I have listened to the album—really, really great job,” Lovato said. “I loved the songs on it. ‘Bluest Flame’ was my song.” (They even included the track on their tour’s pre-show playlist last night.) She also spoke about Gomez’s then-upcoming wedding to Benny Blanco, saying, “I couldn’t be happier for her—she’s engaged. I just wish her the best.”
