Hours after Selena Gomez shared the first photos of Taylor Swift at her wedding on Instagram, Swift debunked a viral rumor about her reception speech on The Tonight Show. Host Jimmy Fallon asked Swift if she really joked that her longtime friend beat her to the altar, like one tabloid reported.
Swift said she didn’t, then discussed what really happened. She stressed that she made a point not to bring up her own engagement to Travis Kelce, and even felt tempted to hide her old mine-cut diamond engagement ring.
“Well, I got to see her be the most elegant, gorgeous, not only bride, but just vision that I’ve ever seen in my life,” she began. “I’ve never seen anything so beautiful as her on her wedding day. And she deserves all this happiness. Benny is—he’s him. He’s so funny. He’s the best. So I did make a speech, but I actually made a point not to mention anything about my engagement.
“Nobody wants you to be like, ‘Hey, I know this is your wedding day, but I’m [engaged]!’” she continued. “You know, I was like, don’t mention it. Maybe turn it [the ring] around, you know what I mean? This is her day. I did do some light teasing about the way that we used to dress in 2008, the year that we met, because you know, we were teenagers and 2008 was quite a year, let me tell you. And so I talked a little about 2008, and I talked about how happy I am for her and just how beautiful it’s been to get to be a part of her life, but I did not make it about me.”
This wasn’t Swift’s first time talking about the ceremony. During her appearance on SiriusXM’s Morning Mash Up earlier this week, she discussed how much it meant to her to see Gomez marry Benny Blanco.
“Selena was the most beautiful—not just the most beautiful bride…[but] the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” she said. “Just so happy, and she deserves it so much. And you only wish that for people, you know?”
She reflected on how quickly things changed for them after she posted photos with Gomez from their Fourth of July celebration in 2023. Swift had revealed in her caption that they were both single at the time.
“How deranged is that post?” she started. “I think back on that, [and] I’m like, there’s no way ’cause if we break it down, I’m in this picture with a bunch of girls—a lot, not just me and Selena. A few of the other girls found their person right after that. And the fact that it was right before the Kansas City [Eras Tour] show, where I’d been like ‘a Happy Independence Day from your local, single girlies’…and then the next day go and play in Kansas City, not knowing that Travis [Kelce, my future fiancé] was gonna come to the show. I just, yeah, it’s unreal.”
In the caption of her wedding photos with Swift, Gomez celebrated the longevity of their friendship.
“In honor of SHOWGIRL .. blessed to have you by my side almost 20 years later gator! I love you @taylorswift forever and always,” she wrote.
