Taylor Swift Fans Have a Theory About Her and Joe Alwyn After Jack Antonoff’s Instagram Story

When Taylor Swift released the Midnights vault song “You’re Losing Me” in May, fans speculated it could be the singer’s first breakup song about her and ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn. Swift and Alwyn broke up in March after six years of dating. As they kept their relationship largely private, only they knew about any potential ups and downs.

But a recent Instagram Story from Jack Antonoff about the making of “You’re Losing Me” added more fuel to fan theories though that Swift and Alwyn were having trouble long before their 2023 split.

Antonoff casually revealed while celebrating the song’s release on streaming platforms yesterday that “You’re Losing Me” was “written and recorded 12/5/2021 right after Taylor ate these raisins.” His Instagram Story showed the candid shot of Swift.

So, timeline-wise, Swift wrote lyrics about a romance fading out and a partner not wanting to marry her over a year before her relationship with Alwyn ended for good.

Here’s the lyrics for the bridge of “You’re Losing Me,” as one example of where Swift’s headspace was at the time: “How long could we be a sad song / ’Til we were too far gone to bring back to life? / I gave you all my best me’s, my endless empathy / And all I did was bleed as I tried to be the bravest soldier / Fighting in only your army / Frontlines, don’t you ignore me / I’m the best thing at this party / (You’re losin’ me) / And I wouldn’t marry me either / A pathological people pleaser / Who only wanted you to see her / And I’m fadin’, thinkin’ / “Do something, babe, say something” (say something) / “Lose something, babe, risk something” (you’re losin’ me) / “Choose something, babe, I got nothing (got nothing) / To believe / Unless you’re choosin’ me.”

This is not the first time there has been commentary about Swift and Alwyn navigating difficulties in their relationship.

After their breakup, a source told People that “they’ve had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together.” They realized “ultimately, [they] weren’t the right fit for one another,” the source said.
