Why Selena Gomez Skipped the 2023 SAG Awards Red Carpet

Selena Gomez didn’t appear to make it out to the West Coast tonight for the 2023 SAG Awards, despite her series Only Murders in the Building being nominated. The red carpet came and went, and while Gomez’s costars Cara Delevingne and Ashley Park posed there, Gomez didn’t. Neither Gomez nor her two costars, Steve Martin or Martin Short, appeared in person at the ceremony.

They did appear in the show’s opening in a pre-taped sketch:

Thirty minutes into the broadcast, Gomez hadn’t appeared on the show broadcast yet.

Her absence isn’t surprising since she is filming the show’s third season in New York City and isn’t individually nominated.

Only Murders in the Building is up for three awards tonight, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Gomez’s costars Short and Martin are also competing against each other in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series category, although neither won.

Gomez spoke about her relationships with Short and Martin in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. I really love them,” she said. “I don’t like calling them my grandpas, but they kind of are. They’ll tell me the same jokes and I laugh every time.”

As for how they communicate, only Short will text Gomez. “What’s funny is Marty will text me, but Steve will not,” she said. “He has my email, but he won’t send me the email. He will send it to [my assistant]. I think he wants to be polite. It’s very endearing, but he makes it a whole thing.”

She also addressed her experience sharing she has bipolar depression publicly and showing her mental health journey in her documentary My Mind and Me. “I’m just so used to censoring myself that it was (a) me wanting to let go and (b) if they’re telling me to be quiet about it, that’s not good because that’s genuinely not the place I’m in anymore,” she said.

“Maybe it was weird and uncomfortable for other people, and obviously I was worried, but I think it finally allowed me to start being open about everything,” she continued. “It’s not that I was kind of sad—I actually have things that are chemically imbalanced in my brain, and I need to understand what that is, take care of it, and nurture it. I’m not ashamed of it. I don’t ever feel, even for five seconds, that I’m crazy. My thoughts tend to ruminate, but it’s up to me to be proud of who I am and to take care of myself. I don’t want people to ever have anybody tell them, ‘Don’t say that because it’ll seem bad. You won’t get this job or that boy or that girl or whatever.’ I guess I was rebelling.”
