The Britney Spears Redemption Tour is officially on, and the pop icon’s most recent pit stop is perhaps her most heartening yet: On Thursday in Los Angeles, Spears married Sam Asghari during an intimate backyard ceremony at Spears’s Thousand Oaks home. The next morning, the singer and her new husband shared their first images from the elegant affair. The bride wore an off-the-shoulder Versace gown and over half a million dollars worth of jewelry, while the groom dressed in a classic black tuxedo, in which they hosted a small party of A-list guests including Selena Gomez, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Paris Hilton.
The couple, who met on the set of one of Spears’s music videos in 2016, got engaged in September 2021, about a month before Spears’s highly publicized conservatorship battle ended with the conservatorship’s termination. Both Spears and Asghari had already shared their desires to get married, with Spears, in particular, revealing her wishes during a conservatorship hearing in June 2021.
“I would like to progressively move forward and I want to have the real deal,” she told Los Angeles probate judge Brenda Penny. “I want to be able to get married and have a baby. I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have a [IUD] inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the [IUD] out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children—any more children. So basically, this conservatorship is doing me waaay more harm than good.”
Since the conservatorship’s dissolution, Spears and Asghari have been eager to start their family, both as a married couple and as parents. Spears had previously announced in April 2022 that she was expecting a baby with Asghari—what would have been his first child—but she revealed a little over a month later that she’d had a miscarriage. “Our love for each other is our strength,” the couple shared in a joint statement on Instagram. “We will continue trying to expand our beautiful family.”
To the vibrant, vocal and—as has been proven by their advocacy on her behalf—powerful Spears fanbase, the singer has always felt like family. Now, perhaps she’ll finally have the fairy tale they so desperately want for her.
