The Hidden Meaning Behind Harry Styles’s ‘Dance No More’ Music Video

As Harry Styles prepares to start his Together, Together Tour next Saturday, the singer dropped a new music video for his Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally track “Dance No More” this afternoon. Styles dances in a custom Marc Jacobs ensemble featuring short shorts for three minutes, entrancing the crowd with his moves. (He even inspires some people on the dance floor to grab a partner and make out, true to his album’s title.)

“Dance No More” lyrically explores the relationship between the performer and audience. His music video brings the song’s message to life, with the camera focusing on his perspective as he commands the crowd.

During a BBC Radio 1 interview earlier this year, Styles discussed the origin of the chorus’s main lyric, “‘DJs don’t dance no more,’ they said.”

“My friend Chloe said that,” he recalled. “She’d been dancing with us, and it was a group of friends who usually are watching her play….We were like, ‘Oh, it’s so nice. So nice to have you like down with us.’ And she was like, ‘I know DJs don’t dance anymore. It’s crazy.’”

Throughout the rest of the song, Styles honed in on that feeling, singing from the performer’s point of view with verses like, “Move it side to side with your hands up high / Keep your customer satisfied and live your life.” He expanded on the spirituality of music in lines like, “It’s feeling like the music has been heaven sent / And that there’s no difference in between the tears and the sweat.”

Those lyrics in particular came from a very personal experience when Styles was in the crowd listening to someone else’s music. During his Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, Styles first confirmed that the “keep your customer satisfied” line is a Simon & Garfunkel reference.

He then added of his “tears and sweat” lyric, “I remember going out, kind of the first time in Berlin, and standing in the middle of the dance floor, and feeling so unbelievably free and safe, that I kind of just had my hands in the air, and my eyes closed, and I just felt these tears like streaming down my face. And it was this moment of like, ‘Oh, I feel so alive right now.’”

Styles gives a candid, revealing look at life as a singer in “Dance No More” in both the song’s lyrics and music video. Read them below, via Genius, and watch the video:
