2026 BECE: GES mourns two candidates killed in motor crash in Upper West region
The Ghana Education Service has expressed grief over the death of two candidates in the ongoing 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The victims, Taufii Ibrahim and Abdul Khalid, were final-year students of Charia Roman Catholic Junior High School in the Upper West Region.
They reportedly died in a road crash on Sunday, May 3, while travelling to Wa to join their colleagues ahead of the examination.
“Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has received with profound sorrow the tragic news of the untimely demise of two Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates, Taufii Ibrahim and Abdul Khalid, students of Charia Roman Catholic Junior High School in the Upper West Region,” the service said in a statement issued on Tuesday, May 5.
The Service described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that the deaths have deeply affected the education community.
“We are deeply saddened that these young lives, full of promise and potential, have been cut short under such distressing circumstances,” the statement signed by Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, added.
The GES extended condolences to the bereaved families, the school and colleagues of the deceased, assuring them of its support in this difficult period.
It also indicated that it will liaise with relevant authorities to gather full details of the incident and explore measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
