Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Everything We Know About Disney’s Live-Action Adaptation

Disney has found a new princess. West Side Story breakout star Rachel Zegler will play the “fairest of them all” in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The original film was released in 1937, which pioneered Disney into its animation legacy. The film had significant success and received an Honorary Oscar award in the 1939 Academy Awards. Snow White is one of many films that Disney plans to revamp into a live-action film. Here is everything we know about the upcoming movie.

Who is in it?

According to Deadline, Zegler has been cast as Snow White. She is the latest star to tackle the role: Sarah Patterson (Snow White), Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror), Kristen Stewart (Snow White and the Huntsman), and Ginnifer Goodwin (Once Upon A Time) played her in previous live-action adaptations. Zegler will be the first Colombian-Polish actress to play a Disney princess.

Opposite Zegler, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is in final negotiations to play the Evil Queen, Deadline reported on Nov. 4. There was apparently a wide casting search for the villain, but “studio execs always had their eye on Gadot,” per the outlet. She was also drawn to the opportunity after big names like Angelina Jolie (Maleficent) put their own spin on iconic Disney villains.

During the studio’s D23 presentation in September of 2022, Gadot said that the Queen was an “iconic villain” and that “getting under her skin was so delightful.”

She added that it was very much not in her character and “very different than what I had done before. I am used to playing the other end of where the heart should be.”

Stage actor Andrew Burnap, who won a Tony for his performance in 2019’s The Inheritance, will star opposite Zegler in a new male lead role—but not as the prince or the huntsman, Deadline reports. Further details are still under wraps.

Per Deadline, Disney’s Snow White adaptation will expand upon the original story and include new songs written by with La La Land songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The Girl on the Train screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson will write the adaptation’s script. Marc Platt will serve as a producer.

Marc Webb (The Amazing Spiderman) will direct the film. Webb spoke to Deadline about Zegler landing the role of Snow White. “Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale,” he told the outlet.
