Madonna’s Confessions on the Dancefloor: Part II: Everything We Know
It’s official: Madonna is returning to music, and she’s gearing up for the release of her upcoming album, Confessions on the Dancefloor: Part II. The project notably marks the pop star’s first project in seven years and serves as a follow-up to her successful 2005 album, Confessions on the Dancefloor.
According to Deadline, Madonna teased the project—which will be released under Warner Records—days before revealing its imminent arrival.
“From being a struggling artist in New York City to signing a record deal to release just three singles, it seemed at the time my world would never be the same again, and in fact that couldn’t have been truer,” she said in a statement. “Since the beginning, Warner Records has been a real partner with me. I am happy to be reunited and look forward to the future, making music, doing the unexpected while, perhaps, provoking a few needed conversations.”
Here’s everything we know about the album so far.
What does the album art look like?
On the album cover, Madonna poses on top of a speaker system while wearing a lingerie-inspired lace dress with purple thigh-high stockings layered over black fishnet stockings. She completed the look with reflective purple heels and a single sheet of semi-sheer purple fabric placed over her face and body.
What has Madonna said about the album’s sound and themes?
In a press release, Madonna quoted a song from the album titled “One Step Away” to sum up the project. “People think that dance music is superficial, but they’ve got it all wrong. The dance floor is not just a place, it’s a threshold: A ritualistic space where movement replaces language,” the statement read.
She also revealed that she came up with a manifesto that guided the recording process of the album: “We must dance, celebrate and pray with our bodies. These are things that we’ve been doing for thousands of years—they really are spiritual practices. After all, the dance floor is a ritualistic space. It’s a place where you connect—with your wounds, with your fragility. To rave is an art. It’s about pushing your limits and connecting to a community of like-minded people. Sound, light and vibration. Reshape our perceptions. Pulling us into a trancelike state. The repetition of the bass, we don’t just hear it but we feel it. Altering our consciousness and dissolving ego and time.”
Who is working on the album?
Stuart Price, who worked with Madonna to create Confessions on the Dancefloor, will be returning for Part II. Price notably collaborated with Madonna to write and produce the original album’s smash hit, “Hung Up,” in addition to the rest of the project.
Can I hear a song?
On April 15, Madonna shared “I Feel So Free,” a song clip from the album. The track largely features spoken word elements over a club synth instrumental.
“Thanks for coming / Sometimes I like to just hide in the shadows / Create a new persona / A different identity / I can be whoever I want to be,” she says over the beats. “Honestly, I wish I could be like other people / And just not care / But out here / On the dance floor / I feel so free.”
At the end of the clip, a man’s voice comes in and says, “Oh, by the way, it all started like this.”
