Olivia Rodrigo’s Dissolving Dress Redefined Tour Fashion
What happens when performance art, fashion, and music collide into one outfit? The answer in 2026 is Olivia Rodrigo’s melting dress designed by Hussein Chalayan. The famous dissolving dress first made its appearance when the singer kicked off her Unraveled Tour on September 25. During her performance of “The Cure,” Rodrigo begins by singing her heart out in a papery babydoll dress in the lightest shade of blue-toned white, designed by Hussein Chalayan.
As water droplets fall from above, the dress ever so slowly dissolves to reveal a vibrant scarlet red hue bleeding through. Her stylists, sisters Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo, called it “The Unraveled” dress on Instagram. Chalayan has a long history of inventive performance art on the runway, creating everything from dresses that turn into tables to motorized garments with opening panels. One could even call him the founding father of performance art on the runway. He’s also having a bit of a comeback, as Acne Studios just released a collaboration with the designer that reinterprets his own design codes in Acne Studios’s core fabrics like denim and jersey. “There’s always a risk element in all of my work,” Chalayan has said of his collections.
Chalayan’s concept for Rodrigo combines references from both the designer and the artist. A decade ago for spring/summer 2016, Chalayan showcased white papery lab-coat-style jackets that dissolved on the runway. Models stood below waterfall-like shower displays as their dresses disintegrated to reveal crystal-covered minidresses. And earlier this year, Rodrigo released her “The Cure” music video, starring as a nurse in custom Dilara Findikoglu, inside a handcrafted hospital made of yarn and cardboard. She pricks her finger with a needle and begins “unraveling” with red yarn coming out of her fingertips. The unraveling concept for Rodrigo is a visual representation of vulnerability.
In the arena of contemporary tour style, we’ve seen everything: narrative storytelling via Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour and jovial fandom through matching outfits with Harry Styles, which has manifested in tour-goers wearing sequined skirts, feather boas, and bright colors. Lady Gaga is a Chalayan fan and has worn and referenced his work often, while Katy Perry has donned LED light-up garments. For decades, musicians have also loved an outfit reveal, done with tearaway seams, Velcro, or other crafty methods for a dramatic outfit change.
However, Olivia Rodrigo’s dissolving dress feels like something unique in the world of musical performance and style that captures the zeitgeist of fashion and performance right now. It takes fashion’s deep obsession with theatrics and performance art that we’ve seen reach a peak these last few years (think: Bella Hadid’s Coperni dress that was sprayed onto her live in 2022 or any one of Anrealage’s recent digital light-up dresses) and repositions it as a new medium for a different audience. Something like this has the theatrics of a performance you might see at a major award show, but it’s for the fans. And with many videos of her look going viral, we wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing more of this kind of performance art fashion worn by top musicians at concerts soon.
