Three new 160-bed regional hospitals under construction — Health Minister

Construction has begun on three new regional hospitals in the Oti, Western North and Savannah Regions, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced.

According to the Minister, contracts for the projects have been signed and contractors have already been mobilised to the sites to commence work.

Mr Akandoh made the disclosure on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, when he addressed the Ministry of Health’s Sector Update in Accra.

Each of the three facilities is expected to have a 160-bed capacity and forms part of a broader government programme to expand and improve healthcare infrastructure across the country.

The projects are among six new regional hospitals planned by the government. The Minister said the remaining three are expected to be initiated in 2027.

He explained that the Ministry of Finance has already provided the necessary commitment and authorisation for processes leading to the construction of the additional facilities next year.

“As I speak to you now, we have signed contracts and contractors have moved to site to commence three of the six regional hospitals this year, in 2026. We are in 18 regions; we are left with the Oti Region, Western North Region, and the Savannah Region.

“So, we have signed the contracts, the contractors are on site, and we are going to build 160-bed-capacity regional hospitals in these three regions.

Interestingly, the Minister responsible for Finance has given me commitment and authorisation to start the processes leading to the next three for next year, and I have the commitment, so we are adding,” he said.

Mr Akandoh said the initiative is intended to ensure that all 16 regions have functional regional hospitals capable of delivering quality healthcare services to residents within their respective areas.

The government expects the new facilities to improve access to specialised healthcare while strengthening the country’s health infrastructure and bringing essential services closer to communities.
