Ghana to reopen diplomatic mission in Ireland
Ghana is preparing to reopen its diplomatic mission in Ireland as part of efforts to deepen bilateral relations and strengthen engagement between the two countries.
The return of the mission is expected to provide a stronger platform for diplomatic cooperation while improving consular services and support for Ghanaians living in Ireland.
Ghana closed its mission in Ireland in September 2009 as part of measures attributed to budgetary constraints and a broader review of the country’s foreign missions aimed at ensuring value for money.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, disclosed the plans during a meeting with Morocco’s Ambassador to Ireland and Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps in Dublin, Dr Lahcen Mahraoui.
The engagement formed part of Mr Quayson’s official activities during a working visit to Ireland ahead of the planned reopening of Ghana’s mission.
Strengthening diplomatic cooperation
During the meeting, Mr Quayson and Dr Mahraoui discussed issues of mutual interest and explored opportunities to deepen diplomatic cooperation among Ghana, Ireland and other members of the diplomatic community.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the engagement demonstrated Ghana’s commitment to dialogue, collaboration and stronger diplomatic partnerships in advancing shared interests.
Dr Mahraoui welcomed Ghana’s decision to restore its diplomatic presence in Dublin, saying the move would strengthen relations between Ghana and Ireland while also contributing to closer engagement with the wider international community in the Irish capital.
He noted that Ghana’s position within the international community made it important for the country to maintain a direct presence that would facilitate greater cultural understanding and provide opportunities for a better assessment of developments and opportunities in Ireland.
Ghanaian community welcomes decision
Members of the Ghanaian community in Dublin welcomed Mr Quayson and his delegation with a cultural display during their visit.
The reception, according to the Ministry, reflected the strong bonds among Ghanaians living in Ireland and their continued connection to Ghana.
The community also expressed support for the reopening of the mission, saying its return would strengthen consular support and provide an important platform for advancing diplomatic relations, economic cooperation and the protection of Ghanaian citizens in Ireland.
