New York Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2027 Hair Trends Are Big, Textured, and Knotted

Minimalist hair had a good run. At New York Fashion Week, hairstylists were ready to turn the volume back up. Across the spring/summer 2027 runways, crimps returned in unexpected ways, teased texture reached new heights, and loose updos replaced slicked-back styles. Even the humble side part staged a comeback. The overall mood felt nostalgic without veering into costume territory, proving that hair is embracing a little more personality again.

For an ELLE beauty editor, the best part of Fashion Week isn’t just watching the models walk the runway, but slipping backstage to see how the looks come together. Between shows, I caught up with the industry’s top hairstylists to learn which styles are poised to take over next season, along with the exact techniques, tools, and products they used to create them. Ahead, discover the five biggest hair trends to come out of New York Fashion Week and everything you need to recreate them at home.

Crimps and Creases

I couldn’t help but notice an abundance of crimps, dents, and creases throughout strands at several shows. At Christian Cowan, celebrity stylist Justine Marjan snuck small crimped strands into a low, messy bun. Over at Area, hairstylist Joey George placed one large dent around the entire crown, as if it was just taken down from an extra-tight ponytail. Most notably, Lacy Redway created stripes of thick crimps juxtaposed with pin-straight strands on every model sent down the Christian Siriano runway. “We’re trying to bring crimps back in style,” Redway tells ELLE.com backstage. “After the hair is dry and flat ironed, we put some crimps three finger-widths apart from each other. We want it to feel strong, polished, and shiny.”

Romantic Updos

Say goodbye to slicked-back styles. For the upcoming spring/summer season, romantic updos with wavy tendrils and loose buns are set to reign supreme. “It’s very whimsical and dreamy,” celebrity hairstylist Glen Coco says backstage at Alice + Olivia. “I think this goddess-like hair is really coming back. It has this beautiful, undone texture that feels effortless and a little romantic.”

Slip Knots

If the Cult Gaia show proved anything, it’s that you don’t need a hair tie to put your hair up. Created by celebrity stylist Karim Belghiran, the single slip knot was “inspired by a dream-like woman in a dream world,” he said in a press release. “Wispy texture and an undone looped knot create a romantic finish that feels light, delicate, and easy.” I spotted the same knotted style at Christian Cowan. “Soft bends, subtle crimps, and an imperfect low knot create a finish that feels both nostalgic and rebellious,” says Cowan lead hairstylist Justine Marjan.

High-Volume Texture

Crimps aren’t the only ’80s hair trend poised to make a comeback in 2027. Teased texture and unapologetically big hair are officially back. For Collina Strada, hairstylist Eugene Souleiman drew inspiration from cult-classic film A Knight’s Tale to create each gravity-defying style. “We created four distinct looks, loosely based around traditional and double mohawks, braids, and contrasting textures, incorporating deadstock fabric from the Collina Strada atelier into the constructions,” he shared. At LaQuan Smith, the trend took on a more wearable form, with both blowouts and updos featuring dramatic lift at the roots.

Sweeping Side Parts

After sleek-straight middle parts dominated the past few years, things are shifting… sideways. Side parts were everywhere, and they appeared across dozens of different hairstyles. At Private Policy, every sleek blowout and blunt bob was parted to the side. Slicked-back buns and wet looks with side parts appeared at Luar. At Carolina Herrera, voluminous blowouts with bouncy curls paired with swooping side parts reminiscent of Old Hollywood glamour.
