The latest installment of the Netflix show follows Lizzie Borden, its first female protagonist, and the events leading up to the shocking axe murders of her parents in 1892, which she was controversially acquitted of—but who could be the subject of Monster season 5?

Not yet. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story premiered on Netflix on September 17, and Netflix typically waits to see the viewer response before renewing a show for an additional season.

Who is the subject of Monster season 5?

The subject of Monster season 5 has not been revealed yet, but Murphy and the show’s creator, Brennan, already have a few options in mind for who it could be.

“It’s always three or four different ones, and we toggle between,” Brennan said in a September 2026 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s a fairly exhaustive list, but it’s tricky. You’d be surprised at how many subjects we start and then abandon, because it’s just not [right]. You can really tell when it’s wrong right away, because you’re asking people to spend seven or eight or nine or 10 hours getting inside this person’s head. They better be really interesting.”

Brennan also revealed that he and Murphy were considering centering a season on Luigi Mangione. “We were trying to crack the Luigi [Mangione] story and it was just laborious and nobody knows it yet,” he shared. “It’s still too new; unknown and esoteric.”

In a September 2025 feature with Variety, Murphy admitted Mangione could be in his “‘maybe one day’ file.” Ted Bundy likely won’t be a featured subject on Monster, though. “When you look at those crimes,” he added, “what are the themes there? It doesn’t ask you any questions about society.”

How many seasons of Monster will there be?

In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brennan revealed that “Ryan and I both said we want to do 10 of them,” meaning there is a possibility of Monster receiving 10 seasons.
