Ansar Al Khairiya Supports PWDs in Asokore Mampong With Start-Up and Mobility Aid

The Ansar Al Khairiya Organization, a Kumasi-based humanitarian NGO, has presented business start-up and mobility support items to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region as part of efforts to get them off the streets.

The donation exercise, held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, forms part of the organisation’s campaign to eradicate street begging among PWDs, a practice that exposes them to danger on busy roads and intersections.

Mobility and business support

The items donated included wheelchairs and motorbikes to enhance mobility, as well as assorted food consumables intended to serve as start-up capital for trading.

According to the organisation, the motorbikes and wheelchairs are meant to ease the daily commuting challenges PWDs face as they struggle to compete with able-bodied persons for public transport. The food items, it stressed, are strictly for business purposes and not for personal consumption.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Public Relations Officer of the organisation, Mohammed Bun Bida, said the project was designed to provide sustainable livelihoods for beneficiaries.

He noted that without stable sources of income, many PWDs are forced to resort to street begging.

“If you gift them at the roadside, they will always come to beg. Even if you assist them without giving them something sustainable to do, they will return to the street,” he said.

Mr. Bun Bida added that beneficiaries have been taken through monitoring and evaluation processes to ensure the success of the initiative.

“Don’t feel shy to trade”

He encouraged beneficiaries not to feel shy about trading with the food items provided and appealed to the public to patronize their businesses.

He further urged companies to consider employing qualified PWDs in remote roles, emphasizing that technology has made it possible to work effectively without commuting to an office.

According to him, some PWDs are highly educated, holding degrees yet remaining unemployed due to their disabilities. He said many can work efficiently in remote roles such as data entry using their phones and laptops.
