A Gilmore Girls Documentary Is Officially in the Works: Everything We Know So Far

Gilmore Girls is getting the documentary treatment. On August 6, Variety revealed that the television show—which largely follows the relationship between Lorelai Gilmore and her teen daughter, Rory Gilmore—will receive a film that offers an insider look at its creation, in addition to behind-the-scenes footage from shooting the series and insights from the show’s creator and producer.

The yet-to-be-titled documentary already has the Gilmore Girls fan base hungry for more details—and an extra cup of coffee. Here’s what we know about the Gilmore Girls documentary so far, including if any of the main cast members are participating in the project.

What will the Gilmore Girls documentary be about?

According to Variety, the documentary will be told from the point of view of series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, executive producer Daniel Palladino. The film “reveals how the show eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon by unpacking the unique alchemy of the creators, cast, crew, and collaborators. The film includes never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage, and script pages.”

Who else is starring in the documentary?

Lauren Graham, who played Lorelai Gilmore in the series, will be featured in the documentary film, in addition to several key cast and crew members. Alexis Bledel, who starred as Rory Gilmore, has not yet been confirmed to have a role in the documentary.

What has the original cast said about the Gilmore Girls documentary?

Following the documentary’s announcement, Graham took to Instagram to celebrate and shared a carousel of images from throughout the series. “Oh hey, hi… we’re making a documentary,” she captioned the post.

When will the documentary be released?

The documentary will stream on HBO Max upon its release, though no release date has been revealed yet.
