Taylor Swift’s Nails Made the Perfect Reference at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Ceremony

On Thursday, Taylor Swift attended the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s 55th Annual Induction and Awards Gala at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City. She wore a strapless black Givenchy gown with colorful flowers, her signature red lip and cat eye, and, of course, her custom-made engagement ring by New York jeweler Artifex Fine Jewelry. But eagle-eyed fans spotted one surprising detail—her maroon manicure, which was colored a bit outside the lines.

These blood-toned nails are a departure from the sky-blue nails adorned with clouds that she sported on Tuesday at the Toy Story 5 premiere (and subsequently to the Knicks game on Wednesday, where she cheered for the team alongside the Haim sisters and Mariska Hargitay). We’ll likely never know the origin story of why she chose maroon (or burgundy), but we can hazard some guesses. Perhaps she realized that her sky-blue nails might clash with her midnight dress and changed them at the last minute. Or she might have just wanted to do something that made her feel connected to her younger self at her first Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony, where she attended with bare nails. Stars, they’re just like us.

On the flip side, Swift has used her nails as Easter eggs in the past, so there is a possibility she’s doing the same here (or paying tribute to one of her songs, “Maroon”?). Only time will tell—and in the meantime, there are plenty of deep crimson nail polishes that you can paint onto your own nails to emulate Swift.
