Marc Jacobs Beauty Is Back and at the Met Gala
The last time we saw Rachel Sennott and Marc Jacobs team up, she was running around New York City trying to finagle her way into a Met Gala invitation for the label’s Scene Collection campaign. “I have to go to the Met Gala this year,” she says in the video. “It’s a big year. I’ve got to be there.” She spends the day trying to get on Subway Takes, paying paparazzi to take photos of her, and more to snag an invite. Clearly, the shenanigans paid off, as Sennott walked the Met steps today, wearing Marc Jacobs and Marc Jacobs Beauty. Not only was she wearing a geometric dress by the designer, but it turns out that Sennott was also wearing products from the brand’s much-anticipated forthcoming return to makeup, after shuttering nearly a decade ago.
The center point of Sennott’s look came from the brand’s new eyeliner, an original fan favorite. “The starting point was this idea of a ‘soft rebellion,’” makeup artist Lilly Keys exclusively tells ELLE. “I kept coming back to a washed lilac eye, which felt romantic and nostalgic, but not overly precious. There’s a subtle nod to the ’60s in the shape and that diffused liner, but I didn’t want it to feel too polished.” Keys focused on creating tension by making the look feel both refined and undone.
Keys says that the new eyeliner (its name is still under wraps) can be either smudgy or precise. “For this look, I didn’t want a sharp, graphic line,” she says. “I wanted something that could be softened and lived-in, almost like it’s been worn for hours. The formula has enough play to smudge seamlessly, but once it sets, it holds exactly where you want it.” Marc Jacobs Beauty will purportedly be on shelves in June. In the meantime, we’ll be making plans to recreate Sennott’s look.
