Will There Be a Devil Wears Prada 3? What We Know So Far

Estimated read time3 min read

The Devil Wears Prada franchise is proof that good things come to those who wait—20 years after the release of the original 2006 cult classic, The Devil Wears Prada 2 arrived in theaters and offered even more quotable lines, stylish moments, and celebrity cameos for its devoted fan base. But with the well-deserved hype around its sequel (and some promising early box office numbers), viewers are wondering if they should gird their loins for news about a third installment.

Here’s everything we know about The Devil Wears Prada 3.

What has the main cast said about The Devil Wears Prada 3?

Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Tucci sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly following the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2 and expressed interest in creating a third installment of the film.

“I hope they don’t wait 20 years!” Streep told the outlet. “I don’t think we can do it in another 20 years. We have to do it sooner than that, because I’ll be dead,” Tucci said, noting that a sequel to part two could happen “if they exhume us” from the grave. Should a third movie come to fruition, he thinks “it could be fun.”

Blunt is also game for creating a third installment, as she and Tucci have some unfinished business in the franchise. “We love what we got to do, but we didn’t get enough to do together,” she said, adding that they wanted “a little more to chew on together” in the second movie. She doesn’t think a sequel would come right away, though: “We believe in letting a lot of time sizzle between these movies.”

Blunt echoed a similar sentiment at The Devil Wears Prada 2 premiere in New York City on April 20. “If we do another one, they better have us joined at the hip,” she told E! News at the time. “I love him.”

Hathaway also remains hopeful about a third movie—“I feel like there’s more road to explore,” she said. “But, we’ll probably have a better idea of that [when the film comes out].”

What have the other cast members said about a third Devil Wears Prada movie?

In an interview with ScreenRant, Caleb Hearon joked that a third movie could potentially come out in 2046, referencing the 20 years it took for the second movie to arrive. In response, Simone Ashley said, “It’s not going to take 20 years. It’s not!”

As for their hopes for a potential third film, Hearon is hoping that he, Ashley, and Helen J. Shen’s characters—Charlie, Amari Mari, and Jin Chao—have more of a presence as a trio. “I don’t know, but I hope it’s the three of us doing something together. I hope we run Runway or something together. It’d be fun,” he told the outlet, to which Shen responded, “Yes, come on.” Ashley added, “It’s inevitable. Let’s see what happens.”

Is the director interested in making a third Devil Wears Prada movie?

Like Ashley, director David Frankel is also waiting to see what could possibly happen with a third film.

“Let’s see what happens. It’s show business. It’s anybody’s guess. We said no 20 years ago, and here we are,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t want to say yes now. They are very rich characters, they’re amazing actors, there’s great screenwriting, so I could imagine that these characters might live on.”
