A Streaming Guide to Wuthering Heights
Emily Brontë’s iconic 1847 gothic romance tale returned to the big screen in Wuthering Heights, a bold new adaptation written and directed by Emerald Fennell. Best known for Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, Fennell takes on the novel with Margot Robbie starring as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. The film opened in theaters on February 13, just in time for Valentine’s Day, and is now headed for our TVs.
Fennell has described the project as deeply personal, explaining at the Brontë Women’s Writing Festival that she wanted the film to capture the visceral reaction she had when she first read the novel as a teenager. “I wanted to make something that made me feel like I felt when I first read it, which means that it’s an emotional response to something,” she said. “It’s, like, primal, sexual.” She also called Brontë’s story “completely singular,” adding, “It’s so sexy. It’s so horrible. It’s so devastating.”
The film follows the destructive, all-consuming relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff across the Yorkshire moors, and leans into the novel’s emotional extremity. Fennell has said she worked to retain much of Brontë’s original dialogue, noting, “I was really determined to preserve as much of her dialogue [as possible] because her dialogue is the best dialogue ever.”
Robbie and Elordi’s collaboration was central to the film’s intensity. In a January 2026 interview with TODAY, Robbie revealed that Fennell pushed the actors to fully inhabit their characters’ connection. “Emerald went into our dressing rooms and made a shrine of each other in our dressing rooms,” Robbie said. “It was so unhinged and so hilarious.” Elordi called the move “funny” and “fantastic,” while Robbie added that it set the standard for how seriously they approached the romance: “And then we just kept trying to meet the bar [she’d set].”
The director also spoke openly about the risks of adapting such a beloved text. “It’s very personal material for everyone,” Fennell said at the Brontë Women’s Writing Festival. “It’s very illicit. The way we relate to the characters is very private, I think.” That sense of danger and intimacy carries through the film’s aesthetic as well, which blends classical elements with modern flourishes, including original music by Charli XCX.
