Acid Wash Jeans Are Back for 2026—and Not Like You Remember

Estimated read time3 min read

Of all the denim trends we expected to see this year, the revival of acid wash jeans is by far the most surprising (and controversial). It’s been a few years (read: decades) since we’ve spotted splotchy and faded jeans on fashionable show-goers, but this year, amongst straight-leg Parisian denim and oversized baggy jeans, acid wash was everywhere. This throwback shouldn’t really be a surprise, given that shoulder pads and colorful jeans are just two of the ’80s trend revivals we’ve seen this year. But if you aren’t sure how to style this controversial fashion renaissance, don’t worry—it’s a lot easier than it seems. Here, find the six ways we’re planning on styling our acid wash jeans in 2026.

The Updated Capsule

When you’re adding a new piece to your wardrobe—especially if you’re not entirely comfortable with it yet—keep the look simple. Swap your favorite jeans for a brand new pair that taps into the trend. Acid wash denim comes in so many different silhouettes and colors, so I suggest choosing a laid-back option in a neutral gray. For the rest of your outfit, dig into your capsule closet and pull out staple pieces you already love to finish the look.

Y2K All the Way

Though the acid wash trend originated in the 1960s with California beach culture, it popped up again in the ’80s—and again in the early aughts. If a Y2K revival excites you, combine a few different elements to create a show-stopping look. Acid wash cargo pants, a faux fur-trimmed jacket, and an east-west bag are the key ingredients for this outfit.

A Preppy Twist

This particular trend might feel more skater boy than boardroom, but you can still style it in a work-appropriate fashion. Grab your go-to preppy essentials like a chic blazer and silk scarf, and let the denim become the secondary character. Blending these styles might not be intuitive at first—but trust us, it works.

The Acid Wash Canadian Tuxedo

If you want to jump into the acid wash trend with both feet, consider updating the classic Canadian tuxedo. Though you can certainly find dramatic pieces, we suggest leaning into faded versions for your denim to get a taste of the look without it getting overwhelming. Create contrast in the ensemble with elegant pieces, like an everyday shoulder bag and classic heels to make this an outfit that works in the evening as well as the day.

Somewhat Subtle

Don’t want to let go of your everyday denim blues? You can find a more subtle entry point to the acid wash trend. With the jeans secured, add staple pieces like a great sweater and your most comfortable loafers. With those simple steps, you’ll be on your way to creating the perfect transitional outfit.

Go Full Grunge

Acid wash jeans carry a natural edge, so if you want to commit to the bit, keep these pieces in mind. A slouchy crewneck sweater and silver-tone hardware in your jewelry and handbag can add a cool, grunge-inspired element even to the most basic outfit. While a great pair of sneakers ups the ante, you could also find some kitten heels to add back in a touch of femininity.
