Taylor Swift continued her The Life of a Showgirl press tour with a stop at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this evening, where she shared more detail about Travis Kelce’s surprise proposal and the old mine-cut diamond engagement ring he designed for her. (Kelce had a game in Jacksonville, Florida, so he was unable to join her in Manhattan. Swift had him on her mind though, telling Fallon at one point, “It’s game day; my head is very much there.”)
Fallon asked about her ring, and the singer showed it off to the crowd. “He did [put a lot of work into it]. He did,” she began. “He had it for a really long time before he gave it to me, too.” She said he had it custom-made with “this amazing jeweler,” Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry.
“I look at it constantly,” she continued. “It doesn’t feel in any way normal for me. I’m just like, oh man, whoa! But it’s more than that [the ring being impressive]. He’s just my favorite person I’ve ever met—no offense to everyone else. But the fact that this is the person that I get to hang out with every day forever is just like, that’s the whole thing. You look at that, and you’re like, ‘I’m going to hang out with him forever, and this represents that.’”
She then gave Fallon the backstory of Kelce’s surprise proposal, which happened after they recorded her New Heights episode. He had his backyard transformed into a secret garden where he popped the question.
“So basically, I think for Travis, the podcast was just sort of a distraction, sort of a ruse, to keep me not looking out the windows of the house,” she said. “Every time he does the podcast, it’s not like he blacks out all the windows, like…there [were] blackout drapes on every single window of the whole house. He was top secret about this, and I really appreciate that. But then afterward I kind of realized, he’s walking around sort of nervous about the podcast. He’s like, ‘My heart is racing. I just really want—I know how much this means to you. I really want this to be what you hoped it would be,’ because we’d been talking about doing the podcast and announcing the album. He’s like, ‘My heart’s racing,’ and I’ve never seen this dude nervous ever. He’s not a nervous person.”
Once they finished recording, “he was like, ‘Do you want to go and just walk around the backyard and have a glass of wine?’” Swift recalled. “And I’m like, ‘I’m always going to want to do that.’ And then I realized exactly why all of the windows were curtained and why he was nervous. It was the best-possible-case scenario.”
Swift has spoken about her partner of two years in multiple interviews this week. On Kelce’s birthday Sunday, she spoke to Sirius XM’s Morning Mash Up about the moment she fell in love with him.
“It’s so hard to just pinpoint that, especially ’cause we’re on the radio, and I’m getting shy all of a sudden,” she said. “But you know, it’s all turned out great. He’s one of those people where as soon as you meet him, you know he’s the best. And you know there’s no one else on the planet that’s ever been even remotely similar to him. He’s one of one. I hope you get to hang with him sometime ’cause you’ll absolutely love him.”
She told Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2 that Kelce is supportive of her music career—and will remain so after they get married.
“I love the person that I am with because he loves what I do, and he loves how much I am fulfilled by making art and making music,” she said. “That’s the coolest thing about Trav: He is so passionate about what he does that me being passionate about what I do, it connects us. There’s no point in time where he’s going to be like, ‘I’m really upset that you’re still making music, the music thing that I signed up for, that I knew you loved, I thought you were going to stop doing that.’”
She also gave a brief update on her wedding planning there, telling Mills it’s not quite her focus. “I’m doing one thing at a time,” she said. “Right now, I’m doing this. I don’t know [if I’m hiring a wedding planner]. Right now, I’m just stoked about the idea that I get to marry this person. So I’m going to think about that, and then I’m going to put out this album, and then I’m going to think about other things after that.”
