Millie Bobby Brown Responds to Comments About Her Changing Accent

As a child actor, Millie Bobby Brown moved from her home in Bournemouth, England, to start her career in Hollywood. As Eleven in Stranger Things, she’s played an American teen for about a decade. Naturally, her British accent has shifted over the years, but it has apparently gotten to her point that her fans are taking notice. There were a lot of comments on her speech as she promoted her new film Damsel earlier this month.

In a new interview with TikToker Max Balegde released on Friday, Brown responded to the comments from fans on her accent with good humor.

“Let me just speak to that real quick,” she said. “I’m an actor. I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America.”

She continued, “I come to set and I’m an actor and I adapt. And so I want to mimic people.”

In particular, it happens when she’s around Americans—like her fiancé Jake Bongiovi for example. The pair have been dating since 2021, and clearly spend a lot of time together, which must be a huge influence.

“Now that I’m in England I want to replicate that! I don’t do it intentionally and I’m sorry if it offends you!” she explained. “But listen I am trying my best!”

Balegde responded that he could relate, because he went to school in southern England, but is originally “from a very small northern town.”

He told Brown, “I was suddenly around southern people and my mum was like, ‘Who do you think you are talking all posh?’ and I am gonna show her that clip and say, ‘Do you know what, Joane? I am trying my best!’”

And in defense of Brown, Baledge also told viewers, “She’s Millie Bobby Brown and she could speak how she wants.”
