Lily Gladstone Curled Her Own Eyelashes for ELLE Women in Hollywood 2023

ELLE Women in Hollywood is where we highlight women we’ve loved watching on screen for the year. At our annual event, our cover stars never disappoint, gracing the ELLE red carpet with head-turning ensembles and beauty looks that Pinterest board dreams are made of. This year, celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose gave the ELLE beauty team an exclusive behind the scenes look at the getting ready process with our cover star, Lily Gladstone.

Gladstone is of Blackfeet and Nez Perce descent, so it was no surprise that she uplifted Native brand, Cheekbone Beauty, and used their products for her red carpet look. “I actually learned about Cheekbone Beauty because Lily loves their products and she showed them to me when we started working together earlier this year,” shares Barone before adding, “I love discovering small indie brands and finding unique products to add to my kit, especially with Cheekbone, [as its] wearable colors and amazing quality.”

For the event, Barone wanted Gladstone’s look to be “glamorous but also carefree.” He gave her a ’70s glam vibe illustrated by sunkissed, glowing skin using N°1 De Chanel Revitalizing Foundation in B30. “Lily has beautiful, fair skin, so I often keep it fair and glowy so [her] skin always looks radiant. Fair skin can photograph flat on the red carpet, especially when it’s too matte. I love using a liquid foundation that reflects light a bit and this is my go-to for Lily,” reveals Barone. To add to that glow-from-within look, Barone used Chanel Powder Blush in 440 combined with their Duo Lumiere Highlighter on her cheeks. “I then keep the T-zone matte even though we want a subtle glow,” he says. To achieve this, Barone used Cheekbone Mattifying Moon Dust Powder.

And while Gladstone is a fantastic actress, Barone reveals she’s a pro at curling her eyelashes. “I usually have her do it with a Shu Uemura lash curler. Then, she did her mascara and made them look perfect,” he says. To give her eyes a fresh look, they smudged deep green liner, one of Lily’s favorites from Cheekbone Beauty, that they have wanted to use. The green turquoise shade has such a vivid color payout that you can see it from afar!

For her lips, Barone went for a bold coral lip stain “to add a pop of color,” he explains. They used Cheekbone Beauty Sustain Lipstick in Alina—“one of Lily’s favorites,” says Barone. He applied the lipstick directly from the tube, then slightly blotted it off with his finger to get the stain look.

Barone believes a strong combo of eyeliner and a pop of lips will be a 2024 beauty trend. “You can play up both eyes and lips, but it’s about the balance so they don’t compete,” he says. Regarding Gladstone’s look, he shares, “The lips look bright, but it’s sheer, so it feels fresh and easy to wear.”

Gladstone’s look is an excellent example of mixing indie and luxury brands for a fresh look. It’s no surprise to see her uplifting a Native, indie beauty brand—her commitment to inclusion and representation, down to her eyeliner, is another reason why she’s a woman in Hollywood that we love and admire.
