All About Selena Gomez’s Dating History, From Nick Jonas to Justin Bieber

Musical artist Selena Gomez is very open about living the single life. Her latest track, “Single Soon,” is even an ode to it, along with her regular jokes about being single on TikTok.

None of that stops fans from being fascinated by the Only Murders In the Building star’s love life. Part of the enduring interest is her history with Justin Bieber, which is long over and yet a big part of both their stories as they dated from their late teens into adulthood.

The former couple’s 8-year on-and-off relationship definitely threaded through a bunch of her connections below, but ultimately Gomez found new relationships on their own terms. Here’s her romantic history so far.

Nick Jonas: 2008

With three Jonas brothers available, it almost seemed inevitable Gomez would date one of them. She paired up with Nick very briefly in 2008. Her friend Miley Cyrus was also interested in Nick at the time, but they have since both moved on, and their friendship stays strong. Gomez did star in the Jonas Brothers’ “Burnin’ Up” music video, so there is at least documentation of the era.

Gomez did comment on the small love triangle with Cyrus, telling W Magazine in February 2016, “We never feuded. We both liked the same guy when we were 16. It was just a Hilary Duff–Lindsay Lohan thing: ‘Oh, my God, we like the same boy!’”

She was referring to Duff and Lohan’s simultaneous interest in singer Aaron Carter around the same time.

“We are now completely settled in our own lives,” Gomez added.

Taylor Lautner: 2009

To continue with overlapping romances of the late aughts, Gomez briefly dated Twilight star Taylor Lautner. Gomez said in an interview with Seventeen that she and Lautner split in part because of how much attention they were getting.

“We would go out to lunch and dinner, but I knew he had paparazzi following him, and I had paparazzi following me,” she said. “So we literally just wanted to hang out, go bowling and stuff, and it went a little too far, I think. People were getting a little crazy about us.”

But at the time of the breakup, Lainey Gossip reported that they were both in Vancouver for filming when Lautner suddenly flew out of the city without letting her know. He allegedly ended the relationship because his parents didn’t want his career to take second place to a girlfriend.

Whatever happened, Lautner went on to date Gomez’s close friend Taylor Swift that same year, and there didn’t seem to be any drama between them. The two Taylors lasted for a few months. In 2023, Lautner even starred in one of Swift’s new music videos with Joey King.

Justin Bieber: December 2009-April 2014, June 2014-October 2014, October 2017-March 2018

Romantically, Gomez is most often associated with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, in part because he was her boyfriend three times. They were first linked on December 31, 2009, when Bieber sang “One Less Lonely Girl” to Gomez during Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. After that, rumors went wild.

The rumors were justified, because they were clearly dating by 2010 but continued to deny it. They also had a somewhat tumultuous relationship over the first four years they were together, though they did start openly attending red carpets together. They took a short break in April 2014 after having a fight at Coachella. Allegedly, Gomez found pics of Kylie Jenner on Bieber’s phone.

They patched things up, but the drama escalated. That April, Gomez was linked to Orlando Bloom, and in July, Bloom punched Bieber in the face in Ibiza. It was reported then that Bieber was taunting Bloom about his ex-wife Miranda Kerr. Bieber had flirted with Kerr at the Victoria’s Secret show in 2012, and it was a sore spot.

“Justin was at one table, and Orlando was at another,” a source told Page Six. “But when Bieber and his party were later walking past Bloom’s table, Orlando refused to shake Bieber’s hand…Bieber said something rude to Orlando, like, ‘She was good.’”

After the punch, Bieber posted a photo of Kerr on Instagram as a further taunt, some speculated, before deleting it. Bieber and Gomez still got back together that summer in June, but in October 2014, the “Baby” singer was supposedly seeing Kendall Jenner behind Gomez’s back. Gomez and Bieber officially split up for three years. Unofficially, it was a bit more complicated.

In 2015 interview with Complex, Bieber called their relationship a “marriage kind of thing.”

“We were so in love. Nothing else mattered,” he said. “We were all about each other. But when it’s like that, and you get your value from that, people will always disappoint you.”

He also said they were living together at one point, explaining, “I learned a lot. I moved in with my girlfriend [Gomez] when I was 18. Started my own life with her…Living with a girl, it was just too much at that age.”

During their break, Bieber was linked to model Hailey Baldwin, and was photographed kissing her while on a New Year’s vacation in St. Barts.

In 2016, Bieber seemed to be making overtures toward Gomez again, sharing throwback pics of them together on social media.

But he started dating Sofia Richie, and she began a relationship with The Weeknd. In October 2017, Gomez and Bieber were spotted spending time together again shortly after she broke up with the Starboy singer, and he and Richie ended.

A source told People at the time that Bieber and Gomez were enjoying “quiet date nights at home and outings to local, low-key spots. They are still catching up and just enjoy hanging out. They have learned from past mistakes and are not putting any pressure on each other. Things are much different and more mature.”

They were seen out and about and enjoying life until abruptly breaking up again in March 2018. Supposedly it was a “break,” not a breakup. Sources told E!, “They were having a lot of little disagreements recently and one fight in particular blew up and caused them to decide to ‘break up,’ however, they’ve been in contact the entire time and their feelings for each other have not changed…They will absolutely get back together and they are not over, but they both need some time away from each other.”

In June 2018, he started dating Hailey Baldwin again. In July, he proposed to her, and in September 2018, they got married.

Orlando Bloom: April 2014 and May 2016

During their 2014 break, Gomez was rumored to have dated actor Orlando Bloom while he was split from Miranda Kerr. They both consistently denied that they were together and insisted they were just friends.

The fight Bloom had with Bieber in Ibiza, as stated before, seemed to be largely over Kerr. However, the suggested relationship between Bloom and Gomez couldn’t have helped. Bloom and Gomez seemed to remain friends over the years—just friends.

But in 2016, they were linked romantically again by photos posted by TMZ where they appear to be snuggling up in a booth in Las Vegas. This was more drama, because Bloom was reportedly dating his now-wife Katy Perry at the time.

Zedd: January 2015-March 2015

Selena and Zedd dated in early 2015, and even went so far as to appear in one another’s Instagrams. Zedd didn’t talk about it until years later, saying, “Reporters were calling my parents. People were hacking my friends’ phones. I was pissed. [Although] I kind of knew what I was getting myself into.…She is one of the most talked about people in the world, but I had no idea how much that would change my life.”

Niall Horan: December 2015 and October 2019

In late 2015, One Direction star Niall Horan and Gomez were photographed at the Santa Monica pier on what looked like a date and later seen being pretty physically affectionate at Jenna Dewan’s 35th birthday party. But Gomez denied any romance in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying, “Oh my god! No. I love him, I always have. He’s amazing.”

They were seen hanging out again in October 2019, but again, nothing was ever confirmed.

A source said then, “Selena and Niall are not dating and have been hanging out as friends. They have always been good friends and have kept in touch throughout the years. They both always have been very supportive of each other’s music and have talked about collaborating before.”

Samuel Krost: January 2016

Samuel Krost is a friend of Gigi Hadid’s. He and Gomez briefly dated in early 2016. He later allegedly wrote and then deleted on Instagram, “Selena is a real girl with a real heart and real feelings. All you superficial who are just unhappy with your love lives, understand that love is real. Although we have ventured on separate paths, at least I know that love exists. I love you, Sel.”

Charlie Puth: March 2016

As is tradition, Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez also denied they dated for a month in March 2016. Years later, Puth told Billboard their relationship was “very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up. I’m trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in—what I was getting myself into.”

As is also tradition with people who have dated Gomez, Puth seemed to hate Justin Bieber, using some choice words towards him while on stage that same month.

In 2022, Bieber and Puth talked to one another on the phone about the moment, and Puth downplayed the seriousness of saying, “Fuck you, Justin Bieber!”

“It hurt my feelings,” Bieber told him.

“You can’t be serious. That wasn’t real,” Puth answered. “That was like, a fucking thing that completely blown out of proportion.”

He added, “Bro, I was being facetious. I was being completely sarcastic..I also can’t tell if you’re joking right now.”

The Weeknd: January 2017-October 2017

In 2017, Gomez went against her pattern of keeping her love life private and was very open about her relationship with musical artist The Weeknd. They were seen in Santa Monica, in Italy, and at Coachella. They even appeared on Instagram and on red carpets together like the Met Gala’s.

In the summer, Gomez secretly went through her kidney transplant, receiving a donation from friend Francia Raisa. She and Raisa went public with the procedure in September.

A month later, Gomez and The Weeknd broke up. A source told People that the issue was distance—he was touring, and she was shooting in NYC.

“She and Abel have been going back and forth for a few months about their relationship,” said the insider. “It’s been hard with him being on tour and her shooting in New York. That wasn’t easy on them.”

They added, “It’s been hard for them to come to the realization that this is the direction things were heading, but it’s been hard for months.”

Andrea Iervolino: August 2022

In summer 2022, Gomez was rumored to be dating Italian-Canadian film producer Andrea Iervolino. Photos circulated of her spending time on a yacht in Positano with him. This is after they were spotted together at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County’s children’s prom back in 2018, attending as just friends.

Drew Taggart: January 2023

Gomez and The Chainsmokers’ Drew Taggart had a brief romance at the start of 2023. They were seen making out at a bowling alley and photographed there together. A source told Us Weekly at the time that Taggart and Gomez were “very casual and low-key.”

“They aren’t trying to hide their romance by sneaking around at members only clubs,” the source said.

Gomez tried to shut down dating speculation by sharing an Instagram Story that read “I like being alone too much.” She added her own additional caption, “#iamsingle.” While Taggart and Gomez were seen out again, holding hands, after she shared that post, by March, they were over. Gomez posted a TikTok poking fun at her single status and joked her “crush doesn’t even exist.” She captioned her video, “Still out here lookin for him lol.”

Zayn Malik: March 2023

In March 2023, it was alleged that Gomez and another One Direction star, Zayn Malik, were seeing one another. A TikTok user claimed that they were seen kissing at a New York City hotspot.

A source corroborated the date, telling Entertainment Tonight, “Selena and Zayn went out in SoHo in New York City last night at around 10:30 P.M. They walked in holding hands and were kissing. Most restaurant staff and restaurant goers didn’t notice them. It seemed like they were comfortable together, and it was clear that it was a date.”

Gomez signaled that relationship was over in late June when she unfollowed Malik on Instagram, and Malik unfollowed her as well.
