Inside Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s Divorce: ‘They’re Figuring It Out in Real Time’
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner were never officially separated prior to Jonas’ filing for divorce yesterday, a source who knows the couple told People, but their breakup does not come as a “surprise” to those who know them.
Both People and Page Six, in the first hours after Jonas’ filing, received intel from sources about the lead-up and aftermath.
People’s source said the couple spent “the whole summer apart.”
“They were not separated but they’ve been living separate lives for months,” the source explained. “[They] haven’t gotten along in a while, but they’re hoping to resolve this all amicably.”
Jonas filed for joint custody of their two daughters, ages 3 and 1. Sources told TMZ yesterday that it is “likely” Jonas will ask for “significantly more than 50 percent physical custody.”
People’s source said custody matters are not at all determined. “As far as custody goes, this literally all just happened, so they’re figuring it out in real time. They did have a prenup. As a family, they were based in Florida. The kids were with him the last few months, traveling with him with family while he’s been on tour. Sophie’s been working in the U.K.” (Turner has been shooting six-part ITVX series Joan since May.)
Page Six spoke to a source close to the Jonas family, who said that there was not one incident specifically that led to the divorce. The couple had “many disagreements.”
“Divorce was a last resort for Joe,” the source said. “He never wanted to break up his family, but he had to take what he felt was the best course of action for his girls.”
“An unhappy home isn’t a home, and the truth is that he and Sophie were going through it this year,” the source continued. “There’s a lot of noise out there, but it wasn’t a straw-that-broke-the-camel’s-back situation like it’s being reported. [The disagreements] just kept building, and Joe finally reached a point where he felt that he had exhausted all options to salvage the marriage.”
Throughout news of Turner and Jonas’ marriage troubles, Turner has maintained silence on social media. Her rep has either declined or not returned request for comment to multiple outlets. Jonas’ rep has not commented either.
Jonas last shared a photo of himself on Monday with his wedding ring very visible. He filed for divorce in Miami a day later. Breakup rumors began over the weekend when fans noticed both Jonas and Turner had not been wearing their wedding rings lately.
