Sydney Sweeney Said She and Glen Powell Purposely Leaned Into Dating Rumors

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, the two leads of the upcoming romantic comedy Anyone But You, say they were aware that certain corners of the internet thought the stars may have had an off-screen romance, thanks to photos of the pair that came out during the shoot.

While Sweeney is engaged to Jonathan Davino, Powell’s breakup from his girlfriend, Gigi Paris, was announced just as the Sweeney-Powell dating rumors were causing a buzz on social media. Now, Sweeney has addressed what she and Powell really thought about the internet’s affair talk in a new, pre-SAG strike interview with Variety.

She said outright that they fueled the gossip on purpose to promote their movie. “It’s a rom-com,” she said with a laugh. “That’s what people want! Glen and I don’t really care. We have so much fun together, and we respect each other so much; he’s such a hard worker, and I’m a hard worker. We’re excited for the press tour, and I literally just left ADR with him. We talk all the time like, ‘That’s really funny.’”

They found joy in leaning in: “They want it,” Sweeney said of the public. “It’s fun to give it to ’em.”

At the time of Powell’s breakup, a source explained to People that Sweeney was not a factor in the split. However, long distance was, something which was “tough” on their romance.

“Gigi only unfollowed Sydney on social media, because Sydney never followed her back,” the source said. “This had nothing to do with Glen and Sydney. Gigi is aware that Glen and Sydney never hooked up.”

The source added then of Sweeney and Powell’s dynamic, “They’re filming a movie that’s a romantic comedy! It’s like when people say about movie stars, ‘Oh, they have such good chemistry.’ It’s just their job. They’re friends that met on set. They’re co-stars.”

It’s unclear whether Sweeney and Powell will get to do their press tour for Anyone But You. The film comes out in December, but there is no current end in sight for the actors’ strike.
