Silo Season 2: What We Know So Far

Ever since its debut as the No. 1 drama in Apple TV+ history, Silo has been headed toward an extended run in its post-apocalyptic universe. The inventive, multi-layered sci-fi series stars Mission: Impossible and Dune actress Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette, an engineer-turned-detective who begins to investigate the underground vessel she (and the remaining last people on Earth) call home, so as to protect themselves from the apparently uninhabitable ruins of their planet. Based on the book series by Hugh Howey, which started with the short-story-turned-novel Wool, the series began development as an AMC project before moving to Apple TV+, where it has since become a landmark project for the still-growing streamer. That means there’s (likely) a lot more Silo to come. Here’s what we know so far.

Is Silo returning for season 2?

Yes. Silo was renewed back in early June, before the series had even dropped its season 1 finale, as Variety reported. In a statement, Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, shared, “It has been enormously fulfilling to see the engrossing, atmospheric and beautifully crafted sci-fi epic Silo quickly become Apple’s number one drama series. As audiences around the world have become gripped by the mysteries and conspiracies buried within this fascinating subterranean world, viewership only continues to climb, and we are so excited for more secrets of the silo to be revealed in season 2.”

In a post-finale interview with Collider, Ferguson herself shared, “Apple is extremely happy, and I’m happier.”

When will season 2 come out?

Apple TV+ seems to have Silo on a fast track, given the early renewal and the fact that filming on season 2 has already launched. As Ferguson revealed to Collider in late June, “We started filming season 2 quite recently, so we are chockablock, smack back in the beginning of the shoot.”

Still, the ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike, and the likelihood of a similar actors’ strike, mean production could screech to a halt. Still, Ferguson doesn’t seem to be concerned, having told Entertainment Weekly, “I’m producing it, and we had all of the script changes and everything prior to the strike so that we’re able to continue to do it, thanks to all of the preparations that we did.”

How many seasons of Silo will there be in total?

Howey’s complete Silo series is made up of three books and three short stories, so it’s possible Silo the TV show will follow a similar pattern and last a total of three seasons. Ferguson seemed to hint at this thinking when she told Collider, “I think two, three years ahead. Right now, sir, it’s one fantastic fucking show, and we’ve green-lit number two.” But given that Apple TV+ has not released any official word, the full number of seasons expected to tell the Silo story is purely speculative.

Who will be in the cast?

Ferguson is already set to return for season 2, and it seems likely most of the remaining main cast will come back as well, including Harriet Walter, Chinaza Uche, Common, David Oyelowo, Avi Nash, and Tim Robbins.

What will season 2 be about?

To avoid spoilers, I’ll keep plot details vague, but know that Ferguson’s promised a “darker” season 2. “I think season 1 was very, very good, but it’s nothing compared to what we’re doing now,” she told EW. “We’ve done the introduction. We know the characters. Now it can go dark. Now things can happen.”
