Selena Gomez’s ‘My Mind and Me’: Everything We Know About the Mental Health Documentary

Selena Gomez is ready to give the world insight into her mental health journey in what appears to be one of the most raw, intimate celebrity documentaries to be released this year. Gomez revealed the trailer for My Mind and Me this morning ahead of its Nov. 4 release, which includes audio from a new song she created for the film. The project was shot over six years and documents her life from her mid-20s to now.

Here, everything we know so far about the project.

Is there a trailer out for My Mind and Me?

Yes, the first trailer was released on Oct. 10. In the two and a half minute teaser, Gomez reflects on what she has been through in the six years the project was secretly shot. “Just be who you are, Selena. No one cares about what you’re doing. It’s about who I am. Being okay with where I am. I am grateful to be alive,” she said in the voiceover.

“Let me make a promise. I am going to stop living like this. How do I learn how to breathe my own breath again?” she added.

Gomez reflected on her feelings about fame, saying it was never her desire to be super famous. “I do know if I’m here [and super famous] I need to use that for good,” she said at one point.

The footage also acknowledged her lupus treatment and recovery and her experience with depression and anxiety. Gomez revealed in 2020 that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

But the trailer also had a strong current of hope as Gomez reflected on the work she has done to understand herself and her mind more. “What makes me happy is connection, and it helps me get out of my head,” she said. At another point, she added, “Everything that I have gone through, it’s going to be there. I’m just making it my friend now.”

What has Gomez said about the project?

Gomez has promoted the project’s poster and teaser and trailer on her Instagram but has kept her own personal comments limited at this point, choosing instead to let the documentary and its footage speak for itself.

She did admit, ahead of the trailer’s release, that she feels a little “nervous” releasing it. “The trailer for My Mind & Me is coming Monday. I’m a little nervous but also excited to share this side of me with you all. ???? @appletvplus,” she wrote on a post shared on Oct. 7.

When she release the trailer, she wrote, “Every breath, a breakthrough. In honor of #WorldMentalHealthDay I wanted to share the trailer for my documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me. November 4 on @AppleTVPlus.”

What will be covered in the project?

Gomez’s life over the last six years has included her Revival tour (which ran from May 2016 to August 2016), and the release of her album Rare (January 2020) and EP Revelación (March 2021). She also shot two seasons of Only Murders in the Building, making a return to acting.

But her personal life also had its challenges. Gomez secretly had a kidney transplant as a result of her lupus in 2017, something the documentary will address as it was a life-threatening situation. She took a break to seek treatment for anxiety and depression in 2016, ending her Revival tour early to do so. In October 2018, Gomez was hospitalized twice for an alarmingly low white blood cell count and began seeking treatment again for her mental health. In April 2020, Gomez revealed she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and made the decision to stop using social media for her own mental health over four years ago now.

Romantically, Gomez had two public romances in that period: her 10-month relationship with The Weeknd (January 2017 to October 2017), and the end of her 10-year on-off romance with Justin Bieber (which ended for good in March 2018). It’s unclear whether they will be addressed in the documentary based off the trailer.

The footage shown makes it clear Gomez’s career, physical health, and mental health journey will be the focus of the project. As the trailer’s summary reads of the project entirely, “After years in the limelight, Selena Gomez achieves unimaginable stardom. But just as she reaches a new peak, an unexpected turn pulls her into darkness. This uniquely raw and intimate documentary spans her six-year journey into a new light.”
