Queen Elizabeth II Will Be Buried Alongside Her Parents at Windsor Castle

Queen Elizabeth II, who died last week at the age of 96, will rest eternally beside her mother, father, sister and husband, according to official announcements from Buckingham Palace. After the late monarch’s funeral at Westminster Abbey, set to take place on Monday, Sept. 19, her coffin will be transferred from Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle, roughly 23 miles west of London.

The monarch will then be laid to rest in the very chapel she commissioned in 1962: the King George VI Memorial Chapel in St. George’s Chapel, so named after her late father, who died in 1952 at the age of 56. The memorial chapel also holds Queen Elizabeth’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and her late sister, Princess Margaret. The queen’s late husband, Prince Philip, currently resides in the chapel’s main Royal Vault, but his body will be moved to the King George VI Memorial Chapel after the queen’s burial.

St. George’s Chapel sits within the much larger Windsor Castle, and is centuries old: The construction was launched in 1475 by King Edward IV and finished by King Henry VIII in 1511.

Those wishing to visit the chapel following the queen’s burial may do so according to St. George’s admittance rules. The chapel hosts worship services that are free to the public every day, but outside of services visitors are welcome on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for a fee. In the interim, Windsor Castle remains closed in respect to the queen and the coming burial.
