Jennifer Lawrence Wears Sheer Black Off-the-Shoulder Gown to TIFF

On Saturday, Jennifer Lawrence arrived at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival at the Royal Alexandra Theatre for the screening of her new movie, a psychological drama titled Causeway, which is the first project from Lawrence’s production company Excellent Cadaver. Lawrence went all out for the red carpet, wearing a stunning sheer black gown with off-the-shoulder bell sleeves over a black bodysuit.

The bodice was criss-crossed with laces, creating a corset effect, with a frayed neckline and the sleeves ended in flounced cuffs. She paired the Dior Haute Couture gown with tall strappy sandals visible through the nearly floor-length skirt. Lawrence left her long blonde hair down, choosing a dramatic side-part. She wore drop earrings and a natural makeup palette.

The film stars Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry, and it made its world premiere at TIFF. The actress also served as a producer, along with Justine Ciarrocchid. It was directed by Lila Neugebauer, who is best known for her acclaimed work as a theater director. The script came from writers Elizabeth Sanders, Luke Goebel, and Ottessa Moshfegh and it co-stars Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jayne Houdyshell, Russell Harvard, Joshua Hull, and Fred Weller.

The story focuses on a U.S. soldier who returns to her home in New Orleans after serving in Afghanistan, where she suffered from a traumatic brain injury, reports Variety. Lawrence plays the soldier living with her mother and struggling with PTSD as she awaits redeployment.

“Her untenable home, her inability to commit to one thing or another because of these internal injuries that are completely invisible but huge — I think I connected with that at that specific time in my life,” Lawrence told Deadline about her character. “So much was going on with me at that time that I didn’t realize. Until I was back, pregnant, married, making [Causeway]. And I was just like, ‘Oh, this is a woman who is scared to commit.’”
