Shakira Announces Separation From Her Partner Gerard Piqué

After 11 years together, Colombian pop star Shakira and Spanish soccer star Gerard Piqué have announced their separation. They have two children together.

In their shared statement, the former couple said, “We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”

Tabloids have been claiming that the couple had moved into separate homes in 2017, with Shakira being the instigator of the separation. There was apparently a lot of renewed speculation, according to the Daily Mail, and a source says that she “could no longer cope with the situation.”

The two met while filming the music video for Shakira’s World Cup song “Waka Waka,” and started dating about a year later in 2011. Piqué’s team won the World Cup the year they met, while Shakira performed during the final game. She announced her first pregnancy in 2012. Two years after the birth of their son, Milan, she announced her second pregnancy, and her second son, Sasha, was born in 2015. They never married.

In a recent episode of The Overlap, Piqué said they never got married because their relationship “works fine as it is.”

He continued, “I like it how we are right now. We have two kids, nine and seven, we work good as a couple. We don’t have the need to be married, it’s fine.”

Shakira has said in the past that Piqué is a great father and support, and they seem to have continued to interact in the past few years, like at the Balloons World Cup as a family in October 2021.

“We’re both very hands-on parents, so it never feels like one is carrying the entire load on their own,” she said. “He probably lets them have a little more chocolate than I’d like, though.”

They also rang in the new year together, which Shakira posted about on Instagram.
