Shawn Mendes’ ‘When You’re Gone’ Lyrics Seem to Be About The Pain of Letting His Ex Camila Cabello Go

Shawn Mendes dropped another breakup song last night, “When You’re Gone,” and the musician didn’t shy away lyrically from exploring the pain of really losing a partner. The release of “When You’re Gone” comes at an interesting time: Mendes spoke earlier this month about how much he has struggled since his November split with Cabello.

“A lot of the things that also is like, resonating in the lyric for me is like, oh, f*ck, you know, you don’t realize, like, when you’re like, breaking up with someone, you like think it’s the right thing to do, you don’t realize all this sh-t that comes after it,” Mendes said in a video he shared on his Instagram. “Like, who do I call when I’m like, in a panic attack? Who do I call when I’m like, f*cking, on the edge? I think that’s the reality that kind of hit me—it’s like, ‘Oh, I’m on my own now.’ Now I feel like finally, like, I’m actually on my own, and I hate that. That’s my reality, you know?”

Mendes also got attention for liking Cabello’s thirst trap Instagram post days after he made the statements.

Cabello was a supportive ex with Mendes’ new release. She liked his Instagram promoting the song.

The two, when announcing their breakup after two years together, expressed their intention to remain friends. “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever ❤️,” they shared. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.”

Mendes’ new track seems to give a deeper look into his side of the breakup. Read the full lyrics, via Genius, and watch the music video for the single below:

Verse 1
You never know how good you have it, oh
Until you’re starin’ at a picture of the only girl that matters, aah

Pre-Chorus

I know what we’re supposed to do
It’s hard for me to let go of you
So I’m just tryna hold on

Chorus

Hold on
I don’t wanna know what it’s like when you’re gone
I don’t wanna move on
I don’t wanna know what it’s like when you’re gone for good
You’re slipping through my fingertips
A little bit, by a little bit
I didn’t know that loving you was the happiest I’ve ever been
So I’m just tryna hold on

Verse 2

I need to learn how to cope without you
I’m tryna protect myself but only you know how to, yeah

Pre-Chorus

Oh, I know what we’re supposed to do
Oh, but I hate the thought of losing you
So I’m just tryna hold on

Chorus

Hold on
I don’t wanna know what it’s like when you’rе gone
I don’t wanna move on
I don’t wanna know what it’s like whеn you’re gone for good
You’re slipping through my fingertips
A little bit, by a little bit
I didn’t know that loving you was the happiest I’ve ever been
So I’m just tryna hold on

Starting to feel like you don’t need me
Wanna believe it’s all for the better
It’s gettin’ real, I’m missing you deeply

Starting to feel like you don’t need me
Wanna believe it’s all for the better
It’s gettin’ real, missing you deeply
So I’m just tryna hold on

Chorus

Hold on
Yeah, I don’t wanna know what it’s like when you’re gone
I don’t wanna move on
I don’t wanna know what it’s like when you’re gone for good
You’re slipping through my fingertips
A little bit, by a little bit
I didn’t know that loving you was the happiest I’ve ever been
(Oh, I’ve ever been)
So I’m just tryna hold on
