  • Demi Lovato spoke to ELLE about her relationship with Selena Gomez, detailing what their friendship is like these days.
  • The two stars have known each other since they were 7 years old and just partnered on a collaboration for Gomez’s Rare Beauty brand.
  • The development comes after Gomez made headlines for attending the opening night of Lovato’s It’s Not That Deep Tour in April.

In April, Selena Gomez attended the opening night of her longtime friend Demi Lovato’s It’s Not That Deep Tour in Orlando, Florida, sharing photos of the two together backstage. While the pair has had some on-off moments publicly in their decades-long relationship, Lovato gave an update on where they stand today in an interview with ELLE.

Lovato and Gomez joined forces on a collaboration for Gomez’s brand Rare Beauty, channeling their 2009 Princess Protection Program characters for the campaign. “We’ve been friends since we were 7 years old when we met on Barney,” Lovato said. “There have been different chapters throughout our lives, and naturally, friends are in each other’s lives heavily at times, and then sometimes you’re not in constant communication. But Selena is someone that I’ve always loved and adored. It’s really great to be in a place today where we can collaborate on things, but also just hang out and spend time together.”

She also discussed the YouTube vlogs they did together when they were teenagers on the Disney Channel in 2008. “I went on YouTube recently and looked at our vlogs together,” she said. “I think that was something that really captured our innocence at the time and our drive to have a presence in front of people while still staying true to ourselves. It was really cute going down memory lane, and I showed my husband. I couldn’t stick around for the whole video because I felt so cringe. But they were iconic. I was like, ‘Okay, you can watch 10 seconds of this.’ I don’t know what I’m doing [in them], but it was really funny and really cute.”

She and Gomez also revisited their vlogging days for the Rare Beauty campaign:

Lovato last spoke about her relationship with Gomez back in April, shortly after the Rare Beauty founder attended her concert. She focused more on the public reaction to their reunion, telling Billboard, “I think the age that we’re at is really loving nostalgia right now. For all the people who are in their 30s and have lived through the Disney era with me, Selena, the Jonas Brothers, and Miley [Cyrus], they’re craving it, and it’s fun to go back and relive those moments.”

Gomez and Lovato drew attention after the concert when they refollowed each other on Instagram. The move came six years after Lovato told Harper’s Bazaar in 2020 that they weren’t close at that point.

She had been responding to Gomez’s Instagram tribute praising her 2020 Grammys performance of “Anyone,” a song Lovato first recorded days before she overdosed in July 2018.

Gomez had written, “I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational, and DESERVED this moment was. Demi, I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”

Lovato hadn’t expected the post, she told Harper’s Bazaar. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so it felt…” She paused, then said, “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”

In September 2025, Lovato signaled that she and Gomez were in a much better place. She praised Gomez’s album with Benny Blanco, I Said I Love You First, during her Watch What Happens Live interview.

“I have listened to the album—really, really great job,” Lovato said. “I loved the songs on it. ‘Bluest Flame’ was my song.” She then wished Gomez well ahead of her wedding to Blanco, which was on Sept. 27, 2025. “I couldn’t be happier for her—she’s engaged. I just wish her the best.”
